ONONDAGA COUNTY – It proved quite a battle when the Skaneateles and Westhill girls tennis teams squared off last Thursday after some early-week rains forced many postponements.
Despite the Warriors twice winning doubles matches in three sets, the Lakers’ strength in singles proved a foundation for it to prevail by a score of 4-3.
All three of those singles matches were decided in straight sets, starting with Lily Miller rolling past Mia Doss 6-1, 6-1 as Kenna Ellis beat Kate Hagrman 6-2, 6-2 and Sofia Capozza had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Julia Fiegel.
Westhill got on the board in doubles when Emily Balduzzi and Megan Batista worked past Bryn Butler and Emerson Decker 6-3, 6-4.
Isabella Johnson and Kathleen Rogers worked past Emma Whipple and Kate Kissel 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while Megan Dwyer and Samantha Burkett claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 classic over Bella Karpinski and Caitlin Day.
But the Lakers’ duo of Eva DeJesus and Isabelle Soderberg sewed up the clinching point, handling Westhill’s duo of Phoebe Gumaer and Olivia Antoine in a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
It was far easier for Skaneateles to defeat Pulaski 7-0 on Friday afternoon. Ellis, Miller and Capozza did not drop a game in any of their singles matches, while Soderberg and DeJesus won the only contested doubles match 6-0, 6-1 over Patiena Ingirson and Brooklyn Fiumans.
Quiet through most of early September, West Genesee finally was able to get in a string of matches against SCAC Metro division foes.
The Wildcats proved successful against Cicero-North Syracuse last Wednesday afternoon, sweeping each of the doubles contests as it beat the Northstars 6-1.
Angelina Allen and Calina Olson paired up to beat Golden Duru and Eve Camplieto 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), with Margaret Mello and Isabelle Wells blanking Meghan Obleman and Lily Mesco 6-0, 6-0.
Gwen Shope and Helena Allen worked to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Mackenzie Prentice and Kathleen Taru as Grace McInerney and Hannah Sparks got past Jaila Killingbeck and Andrea Iqbal 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
