The Fairmount Community Library, located at 406 Chapel Drive, wrapped up a successful Summer Reading program with a record number of summer reading participants ranging from Pre-K to adult readers. Over 250 patrons participated in this year’s Tales & Tails Summer Reading theme. Following a difficult summer during 2020, the library was able to open its doors during the summer of 2021 and hold outdoor programs for families to enjoy while adapting to the ever-changing COVID pandemic. Record attendance at outdoor programs were also recorded as families gathered safely together to enjoy library programs and resources from May through the month of August.
During the summer months, Fairmount Community Library educators created programs including Outdoor Storytimes and Toddler Playgroups, Outdoor STEM, Spanish lessons, Music classes, Tie Dye activities, an Outdoor Storywalk, Yoga, and a new Kids Summer Book Club, to name just a few. Families were also able to follow along with educational videos offered on the library’s Youtube channel, and watch a special Zoom video and STEM lesson about conservation while meeting FCL’s adopted Sea Turtle mascot, Maisy.
“Many libraries in our community are providing so much more for families as COVID changes and evolves,” said Director, Brenda Shea. “Our library educators prepared for lessons by providing fun, innovative and hands-on learning for children and families. A great way to avoid the Summer Slide that we see during the months when children aren’t attending classes.”
The library will continue to increase programs during the fall season, and offer special options for parents who are looking to supplement classroom instruction.
