Baltimore Woods announces member art show

Connection to the natural world is the prevailing theme of Drawing on Talent, the current art exhibit at Baltimore Woods Nature Center. Paintings, collage, jewelry and more by local artists are being showcased on Mondays and select Saturdays through Dec. 14 in the Art Gallery of the Interpretive Center at 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus. To maintain the safety of all, an advance reservation is required online at baltimorewoods.org. There are no admission or parking fees, and all the artwork is for sale.
In addition to having a gallery show at Baltimore Woods Nature Center, this year the exhibit is being offered virtually through the website.
“We are excited to be sharing the exhibit in such a way that people who are concerned about the safety of seeing the exhibit in person may enjoy it from their homes. The virtual show also offers our artists the opportunity to share their accomplishments with friends and family who may be far away, and so it is also a way of connecting people,” said Karen Jean Smith, Baltimore Woods’ art gallery coordinator. This is the 12th year for Drawing on Talent, the annual members exhibit.
Those who create primarily for personal pleasure as well as professional artists are among our participants.
Every work of art in this show is unique due to the individual interests of the artists and their various styles and choice of media.
Deb Laun’s sterling and turquoise jewelry (Mountain Lake series), for example, was inspired by the small mountain lakes of the Adirondacks, while Dean Kolts (Ready to Roll) found the subject for his photograph in the valley farmland just south of Tully. Others chose to share with us depictions of wildlife. Sophia Frost (June) painted a picture of a Baltimore Oriole that she observed during quarantine, and Jim Shake (Splashing Bear) photographed a bear looking for food during his travels to Alaska. Both Donna Perry de Monte (Marcellus Park) and Mary Beth Sorber (The Footbridge) found inspiration at nearby Marcellus Park, where they each like to take peaceful walks, an activity with which we can all relate.
This year’s participating artists are Rod Best, Barbara Bratt, Deborah A. Connolly, Milton Franson, Sharon Frost, Skip Frost, Sophia Frost, Julie Gratien, Judith Hand, Alan Johnson, Dean Robert Kolts, Deborah Laun, Christy Lemp, Diane Menzies, Jill Newton, Gail Norwood, Kathleen O’Dell, Jeff Perkins, Donna Perry-de Monte, Jim Shake, Jamie Skvarch, Karen Jean Smith, Marybeth Sorber, Guy Swenson, and Jeanne Ulrich.
