Mary Powers Gosden featured at Cazenovia Artisans
“Time Honored” local artist exhibition of clocks and clock-themed paintings Mary Powers Gosden is a member of Cazenovia Artisans and the featured artist for the month of February 2020.
The show, titled “Time Honored,” presents many different pieces of porcelain that have been painted, sand blasted, and drilled to create beautiful working clocks, or simple utilitarian or decorative pieces. Gosden’s penchant for all things mechanical, technical, and complex come into focus in so many ways, you will be amazed. Some pieces look 3D, some feel 3D, and others appear to be moving, even though they are only two-dimensional art.
Gosden began painting pocket watches some years ago, because her grandfather used to repair them as a hobby. As a young child, she could not fathom how her grandfather’s large farmer hands could finesse such fine tools and tiny pieces into a working mechanism.
Gosden has always loved to learn about how things work, and how they are put together. It was only natural when she started to paint on porcelain. The technique is the same that she uses to paint other mediums, including balance of warm and cool color and not using a lot of detail.
As an artist, Gosden’s goal is to continue to influence the porcelain art world and push this medium forward, both in subject matter and methods. In USA and Canada, especially, for many generations, the paintings have stayed the same subject matter and technique, and the medium has not progressed with the times. “Art is about change, expression and seeing things in a new way,” Gosden said. “When people tell me that they see architecture or mechanisms (like clockworks) in a new way or see warm and cool colors for the first time, it is the greatest compliment I could ever receive. They are ‘learning to see,’ which will influence their creativity and life in many ways.”
Gosden teaches at her home studio in Cazenovia.
She is also a world-renowned artist, teacher and author, having created art and music her entire life. Come and see this extraordinary body of “Time Honored” work for the entire month of February. Cazenovia
