Marcellus High School to host vaping forum
Marcellus High School invites students, parents and community members to an important forum on the dangers of vaping at 7 p.m. Dec. 2, in Groeling Auditorium, Marcellus High School, 1 Mustang Hill, Marcellus.
The event will feature presentations from the following guest speakers: • Dr. Jana Shaw of SUNY Upstate Medical University; • Lee Livermore of SUNY Upstate Poison Center; and • representatives from Prevention Network and community law enforcement and emergency services.
The evening will also include a “Hidden Mischief” simulation in which parents can search a mock student bedroom for drug and alcohol paraphernalia items that may be indicators of abuse.
By 2017, more than 2 million teenagers were using e-cigarettes, and e-cigarettes had surpassed combustible cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. middle and high school students, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
School districts are increasingly encountering these battery-operated vaping devices, often marketed as a healthier, safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, as students use them to inhale nicotine, THC and various synthetic chemicals.
Research has shown that many youth try—and then continue to use—vape devices because of the appeal of the tasty “juice” flavors that they vaporize, creating an aerosol that is inhaled. Students often don’t realize the inherent health risks associated with inhaling these vapors.
