The Skaneateles Press published an article about a statewide English assessment in which the Skaneateles Central Schools placed first! When interviewed, Marilyn Greer, former Waterman School principal, revealed that her strategy for success was to focus on the student rather than the program. This proved highly effective! The town’s academic excellence continues, since Skaneateles High School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2018. Schools are given this distinction on the basis of quality education by the United States Department of Education.

A former Skaneateles resident, Alice Smith, celebrated her 103rd birthday! This centennial surpassed all expectations by living at least 29 years past the average life expectancy of 74 (countryeconomy.com). Since then, the average life expectancy for women in the United States has drastically risen to 81 years thanks to modern medicine and technology! However, as a result of increased life span, full retirement age is also increasing, causing people to work for more years than is practical. By 2020, the retirement age will be 66 years and eight months rather than the current 66 years and two months.

The Skaneateles Press published an article regarding a cancer study conducted by the American Cancer Society. The study was to be nationwide, and would involve over 1,000,000 persons and 70,000 trained volunteers. According to the American Cancer Society, the results of this study showed that the increase in female lung cancer death rates only occurred in smokers, which supports the link between smoking and lung cancer. Although smoking rates have gone down from 42% in 1965 to 14% in 2015, many adolescents are now turning to a new troubling activity: vaping (AACR). According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, vaping can have many adverse effects, such as an increased chance of a heart attack. Since vaping is still relatively new, scientists have yet to determine its long-term effects. However, because vapes contain many chemicals, it is highly probable that users will experience derogatory health effects in the future. Do you know whether your child vapes?

Nowadays, as many more people own chickens, it is important to provide them with proper care and affection. According to Permaculture, having chickens brings many benefits to your life, such as lots of love and fewer pests like ticks and mosquitoes. You can even order chickens through the mail through websites such as Murray McMurray Hatchery! The vast and wonderful internet may not be able to give you love, but it can give you chickens, which are basically the same thing.
