Skaneateles Schools designated as Recognition Schools
At the Skaneateles Central School District Board of Education meeting on July 2, Superintendent Lynda Quick announced that Skaneateles High School and Waterman Elementary School were designated as Recognition Schools by the New York State Board of Regents recently.
Fifteen local high schools including Skaneateles earned the designation based on high academic achievement, growth and graduation rate. Waterman Elementary was one of only three elementary schools to earn the distinction in Central New York.
Ira Schwartz, the assistant commissioner in the Office of Accountability for the State Education Department, wrote the following to Skaneateles Central School District:
“On behalf of Commissioner Elia and the Board of Regents, I write to congratulate you on your district having schools that have been designated as Recognition Schools,” the letter read. “We applaud your efforts and look forward to assisting your district in having all of its students achieve college and career-ready standards.”
Also at the meeting, the BOE accepted the resignation of Julie Abbott-Kenan, who recently served as BOE vice-president.
Abbott-Kenan is going to focus on her family, and on serving her constituents as the 6th District Onondaga County State Legislator.
The board is accepting letters of interest from Skaneateles residents who would like to serve on the board from August 2019 to May 19, 2020.
Letters can be sent to Karen Dunphy, district clerk.
At the annual re-organization meeting, the board leadership was elected.
For the 2019-2020 school year, Thomas Lambdin will serve as board president, and Michael Kell will serve as board vice-president.
