The following was issued by the City of Syracuse following reports of algal blooms being spotted in Skaneateles Lake over the weekend and on Monday.
The City of Syracuse observed and sampled shallow water surface algae near a jetty on the north end of Skaneateles Lake that appeared and cleared over several hours on Saturday.
Algae findings in shallow areas near docks and jetties are not uncommon in the summer. Algae has appeared in the same area today (Monday) and is being monitored and sampled.
The city reported the observations to the State Department of Environmental Conservation and Onondaga County. Samples are being analyzed this week.
Results are expected later this week. Results of drinking water sampling and updates are publicly reported at http://www.ongov.net/health/bluegreenalgae.html.
If you think that an algae condition may be present on Skaneateles Lake, the Onondaga County Health Department asks that you report it to the Skaneateles Lake Watershed Inspection Program at 315-685-6486.
“The Village Water Department continues to work closely with the city and the Department of Health and stands ready to implement our action plan should the need arise,” Skaneateles Director of Municipal Operations Shannon Harty said.
