A Christmas tragedy turned into a Christmas miracle for a woman involved in a car crash on Route 31 in Clay/Liverpool earlier this month.
On Dec. 13, Heidi Woods was involved in an accident, resulting in an unsalvageable wrecked car and severe head trauma. Off-duty Manlius police lieutenant Jeffrey Slater, who happened to be driving by with his wife and children on that snowy night, pulled over to aid Woods while his wife called 911. Woods posted on Facebook that she was informed by her doctor that if the police lieutenant had not wrapped her bleeding head at the scene, she would have bled to death.
After sending out a plea to search for her savior via social media recently, the Manlius Police Department issued a response on its Facebook page this morning, Dec. 27, notifying her that Slater was the officer who helped save her life that night.
While more information on the incident is to come, Manlius Police Chief Michael J. Crowell said that efforts are being made to bring the two together so that Woods can formally thank her hero in person.
