Skaneateles Youth Hockey Association to host free event
The Skaneateles Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) will be hosting a Try Hockey for Free event on Oct. 14, 2017 from 10AM to noon at the Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center. “Our annual try hockey event provides an opportunity to introduce local area boys and girls and their parents to youth hockey and SYHA programs available. It’s a fun event where the kids have a great time and parents get to experience watching their child learn a few fundamentals and maybe make a goal for the first time.” said Joe Orsen, SYHA Mites Program Director.
No skating skills or previous experience is required. Participating boys and girls, ages 4 or older, will learn how to dress, stand on skates, hold a stick and skate under the supervision of SYHA coaches. All equipment will be provided at no cost and players get to keep their jerseys. Off-ice volunteers will be available to answer any questions about SYHA and available programs. A celebration party for all participants will be held afterwards. Children from Skaneateles and surrounding towns are invited to attend. “SYHA draws players from many surrounding communities that do not have hockey programs including Jordan, Elbridge and Marcellus.” said Orsen.
SYHA has provided organized youth hockey programs within the community for over 20 years. The mission is to provide young players opportunities to develop their skills from beginner to advanced, have fun, make friends and learn the importance of sportsmanship, commitment and teamwork. For those who may decide to register and participate for the season, SYHA has bags with all necessary equipment available to rent and, the participant fee for first year players joining the entry-level Termite program is waived.
