With more than 2400 pieces of equipment, from canes to hospital beds, the facility known as “the loan closet” is a busy place. A project of the Female Charitable Society, the program began in 1928 when the society purchased a wheelchair for the use of someone in need.
Today a virtual fleet of modern wheelchairs passes through the doors of the loan closet each year. At last count more than 280 wheelchairs were listed on the inventory.
The facility is open Monday through Friday year round. Volunteers answer the phone, field inquiries and are responsible for signing equipment out and recording its return. Volunteers are always needed for staffing the desk, filling in as “subs,” repairing equipment, building and grounds maintenance, and clerical duties. Training is provided. Job satisfaction is high. And the view of the river with its water fowl and luxury boats is a unique perk.
If you are unable to volunteer but would like to support the society, new members are always welcome. Requirements are limited to paying annual dues, which are less than the cost of a box of popcorn at most movie theaters.
Information about the FCS and its volunteer opportunities is readily available. Visitors are always welcome to stop by the loan closet at 10 River St. during open hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday).
