Laker Limo seeking volunteers
Laker Limo is the result of a very successful community effort and has become an affordable, dependable, and essential transportation resource for this community’s senior and disabled residents.
Although, with extreme gratitude for this communities generosity that makes the project possible, it is an admirable fact that volunteerism is the vehicle that propels this program.
The Laker Limo volunteer team consists of 68 individuals that donate only one day a month to man one of two vehicles, a Dodge Caravan or a 10 passenger two-wheel chair accessible shuttle bus. With both a driver and escort on board for every trip, 68 volunteers start to spread thin during winter and summer months when volunteers vacation. Scheduling gets pretty tricky and some volunteers donate additional days to keep the program rolling.
Scheduling is designed to make volunteering simple and convenient for those who participate. Preferred days and unavailable days, weeks, or months can be requested and scheduled around. The schedule is developed at the beginning of each quarter and distributed so all know their particular days of commitment in advance to start the quarter. If changes become necessary, volunteers are provided a list of all volunteers to enable swapping of donated days among volunteers.
The vehicles are well maintained and always fully fueled by designated “gas guys”, so as a volunteer it is to simply enjoy “paying it forward” and provide transportation for someone in need. In many cases, this is the only option for those in need and volunteerism has made it possible.
If you have one day a month to donate or are a retiree or plan to retire soon, this program is a rewarding way to give to the community and interact socially while providing a service that enables individuals to maintain their independence and connect with physicians, shopping needs, family, and friends.
The Sherwood Inn has generously provided the dining room for an informative display of The Laker Transportation Project Inc. and the volunteer commitment. Light fare and a beverage will be offered with a brief presentation outlining operating procedures, services provided, and equipment operation. Please consider volunteering for this worthwhile community asset. Join us Monday, May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. to learn more and sign on. For further information contact Randy 685-3908, RSVP not required but appreciated. Walk-ins welcome!
