Looking for a way to volunteer in your community and make it a more attractive place to live? The DeWitt Advisory Conservation Committee (DACC) is looking for volunteers to contribute to the second annual DeWitt town-wide fall cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“We could never have enough volunteers,” said Dennis Payne, member of DACC and organizer of the event. “We want to keep DeWitt an attractive community. It’s an investment in the community, if we keep the place nice it will attract both businesses and residents to the area.”
There are three meting locations for the cleanup: DeWitt Town Hall, Butternut Drive, East Syracuse; Robbie T’s Pizzeria, North Street, Jamesville; and the Village Deli, Manlius Street, East Syracuse. Refreshments will be available at each location.
Volunteers will be provided with trash bags and stickers, but are asked to bring their own gloves and to dress accordingly.
Although the hamlet of Jamesville has been hosting its own fall and spring cleanups for close to two decades now, this will be the second year the fall cleanup is a townwide effort.
“Cleaning becomes a contagious thing. When someone sees something being kept clean, they’re more likely to keep it that way. But it goes the other way too. When people see a street filled with trash, they’re also more likely to not think twice about throwing something there themselves,” said Payne.
At the spring cleanup last April, Payne said more than three tons of waste was picked up by volunteers. Those interested in volunteering but cannot make it during the set time still are invited to participate at their own time and can contact Payne at 469-0656 or [email protected].
