When it made the trip to Long Island last weekend for the John Glenn-Northport Invitational, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team did so still with a perfect mark in the CNY Counties League and knowing a big Friday-night showdown with Liverpool looms ahead.
To warm up for the bigger tests ahead, the Bees made quick work of Henninger last Tuesday night, sweeping the Black Knights 25-5, 25-14, 25-10, and giving most of its lineup a chance to shine.
Morgan Shibel led with six kills, while Michelle Voyer had five kills and Katie Wicks added four kills. Kiannah Titus got five aces to go with her three kills as Abby May and Skyler Parrow-Strong earned four aces apiece. Maddie Stone earned 16 assists and Hannah Klaben contributed seven assisets.
Meanwhile, the Baldwinsville boys volleyball team would offer chase to Cicero-North Syracuse in the CNY Counties League, awaiting a rematch later this month after a three-set loss to the Northstars on Sept. 29.
But the Bees toppled Oswego two days later, and stayed hot last Monday with a sweep of Central Square, rolling through a 25-14 first set before putting away the Redhawks 25-18 and 25-16 in the next two sets.
Dan Shorney finished with 19 assists, with many of his passes going to Liam Wicks, who had a team-high nine kills. Cole Patnode added five kills, with Max Thurston earning three kills. Alex Brummer and Nick Walker each had two kills as David Cerqua picked up five digs.
A terrific weekend followed for the Bees, starting with Friday’s sweep of Liverpool. Though the Warriors pushed hard in the first set, B’ville still won it, 25-22, and went on to take the next two sets by lopsided margins of 25-12 and 25-13.
Wicks led a well-balanced front line with nine kills, with Walker gaining eight kills, plus two aces and two digs. Brummer, with six kills, wasn’t far behind as Ryan Gell put together four kills and four digs. Shorney improved to 21 assists, with Cerqua again earning five digs.
From there, the Bees traveled to the Penfield Tournament, near Rochester, and emerged victorious in the Silver Bracket, gaining more confidence as it returned home and looked to avenge a Sept. 17 five-set defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius Tuesday night before hosting Syracuse on Thursday.
