The Fayetteville-Manlius cross country teams would run last Tuesday against a strong team from Baldwinsville, sweeping the Bees, though the boys race proved quite close, F-M needing a strong effort from its top four runners to hold off the state Class A no. 13-ranked Bees 23-33.
Patrick Perry blazed through the B’ville course in 15 minutes, 14 seconds, prevailing over teammate Peter Ryan, who was second in 15:28 as state no. 1-ranked F-M got a 1-2 sweep.
After the Bees’ Ryan DeLola took third place in 15:32, the Hornets’ Joe Walters grabbed fourth place, in 15:36, while Ben Otis was fifth in 15:47. This helped F-M fend off the fact that B’ville swept the rest of the top 10 to make it closer.
On the other hand, the girls race went 15-50 in the Hornets’ favor against B’ville, who had the no. 19 state Class A ranking. Sweeping the top seven spots in the finishing order, F-M saw Claire Walters take first place in a time of 17 minutes, 37 seconds, nearly half a minute ahead of the pack.
Rebecca Walters, in 18:02, edged out Jenna Farrell (18:05) for that runner-up spot, while Megan Menz was fourth in 18:19. Phoebe White, in 18:31, completed the top-five sweep, with Christina Berge’ and Sophia Ryan both finishing in 18:52, ahead of the Bees’ top runner, Justus-Holden Betts, who was eighth in 19:02.
Jamesville-DeWItt didn’t race until Thursday, where it swept Oswego. In the girls 16-50 romp over the Buccaneers, the top-four sweep for the state Class B no. 8-ranked Red Rams included Megan Brown, Sophia Vinciguerra, Hannah Butler and Alexandra Street all hitting the finish line in 21:31.
Catherine Keane and Abby Palin also ran together for the Red Rams, posting times of 22:58, ahead of Emily Shapiro (23:59), Samantha Aitken (24:08) and Abigail Leavitt (24:18), who also recorded top-10 finishes.
On the boys side, J-D beat Oswego 20-42, seeing Matt Salbert, in a time of 18:38, finish right behind the Bucs’ Dalton Babcock (18:29) for first place, but get far more help.
Tyler Glowaki was third, in 18:52, with Miles Chandler (18:57) beating out James Pieri (18:58) for fourth place. Patrick Dye (19:04) and Sam Glisson (19:05) ran together, too, as Nick Mannion finished ninth in 19:19 and Lennier Stynes (19:23) was 10th.
East Syracuse Minoa dropped both sides of last Wednesday’s meet against Central Square, with the closer of the two races seeing the boys Spartans fall to the Redhawks 25-34.
Matt Young finished second, in 17:25, behind Central Square’s Sean Kuehn (17:06), while Jared Henry was fourth in 18:16 and Nick Berg (18:24) was fifth. But starting with Will Gordon’s sixth-place time of 19:10, the Redhawks swept the rest of the top 10 to finish in front.
In the girls Spartans 22-38 defeat, Natalie Marra, who was coming off her win on a home course at the ESM Invitational, prevailed again, her time of 21:25 beating the Redhawks’ Eva Keohane by 22 seconds.
But of the top 10 finishers, just three were from ESM. Besides Marra, Megan Vanderwarker got to fifth place in 23:59, while Sarah Tingley took ninth place in 24:33.
CBA was swept last Wednesday by the combined Westhill-Bishop Ludden team. In the boys 19-44 defeat, Dominic Morganti contended in the individual race, getting a time of 13:54 to finish right behind the Warriors’ Garnet Remillard (13:45) in first place. Brendan Keeney, who was ninth in 15:11, was the Brothers’ only other top-10 finisher.
In the girls race, where CBA lost, 19-49, to Westhill-Ludden, Lucy Parson had a strong race, taking second place in a time of 17:03, only trailing the Warriors’ Genny Corcoran, who won in 16:20.
