Neighbors and sometimes rivals, Cazenovia and Chittenango met up in girls tennis on Tuesday afternoon – and when it was tallied up, the Lakers had subdued the Bears 6-1, basing its victory on winning all four of the doubles matches between the two sides.
Laura and Lucy Connor got it started, beating Mackenzie Millick and Ally Choi 6-3, 6-1, while Anna Barrett and Brittany Wright earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jordan Kelly and Callie Lalor.
Surviving a tough second set, Julia Barrett and Julie Silverman got past Alyssa Knight and Brooke Van Gorden 6-3, 7-5, and in a similar match Lizzy Druke and Annika Bruno had a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jessie Gilbert and Mya Streiff.
Moving to singles play, Chittenango did get on the board when Kelly Gloo defeated Ava Gurney 6-0, 6-4. But Cazenovia countered with Alex Galle defeating Shannon Koegel 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and Lucy Langan needing three sets to turn back Anna Norman 7-5, 2-6, 10-5.
On that same day, the Lakers could not take a point from Tri-Valley League power Oneida in a 7-0 defeat. Combined, Gurney, Galle and Langan notched just seven games in six sets of singles play, while the closest doubles matches saw the Connors fall, 7-5, 6-1, to Jillian Broddock and Samantha Lusher, with Wright and Barrett losing to Jenna Russ and Claire Mancarella 6-2, 7-5.
Cazenovia began its week with a 7-0 rout of Pulaski. Gurney started the singles work, topping Jennifer Lapp 6-1, 6-0. Galle had a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kelly Bushell, with Langan defeating Delilah Mehallow 6-1, 6-0.
Pairing again in doubles, the Connor sisters handled Samantha Dawes and Cerenity Geer 6-1, 6-0, with Jana Harris and Meg Milmoe topping Cassandra Chase and Savannah Goodsell by those exact same scores. Wright and Anna Barrett and Wright got past Alaura Gonzalez and Shelby Goodsell 6-1, 6-1, with Summer Steinhorst and Julia Barrett handling Alexis Bowen and Abby Bonanno 6-0, 6-1.
Chittenango, 4-1 going into the week, was impressive on Monday afternoon, taking out Cortland 7-0, and keeping the shutout when Norman beat the Purple Tigers’ Julie Marshall 6-3, 2-6, 10-5.
Gloo topped Jackie Phillips 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), with Koegel earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Katherine Musci to complete the singles sweep. In a three-set doubles battle, Kelly and Lalor rallied to beat Kali Oaks and Meaghan Kendall 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Choi and Millick handled Allison Holl and Jessica Kryger-Stramba 6-2, 6-4, while Knight and Van Gorden beat Hannah Sidebottom and Alexis Burnham 6-2, 6-3. Streife and Gilbert got a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rhianna Eleck and Madison Wasley.
