Even at this early stage in the season, the Skaneateles girls tennis team is proving that, whatever combinations are used, the results tend to be the same.
The first of two Laker duels with Cazenovia (the other takes place Sept. 24) took place last Wednesday afternoon, though this was the match that would count in the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Skaneateles rolled past Cazenovia 6-1, claiming all three of the singles matches. Erica Byrne, in third singles, had the toughest haul, but made it past Lucy Langan in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Otherwise in singles play, Angela Krause survived a tough first set to put away Ava Gurney 7-5, 6-1, while Olivia Gage reversed those scores in a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Brittany Wright.
Over in doubles, Skaneateles went 3-1, only falling when Lizzy Druke and Annaka Bruno beat Alex Ditch and Mary McNeil 7-5, 6-2, but claiming everything else as it rolled out different doubles teams than the ones who beat Marcellus in the Aug. 28 opener.
This time around, Maura McNeil was with Julia Torrisi, and after a slow start they rallied to top Alex Galle and Julia Barrett 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Rachel Feeney paired up with Bailey Parson, and they beat Summer Steinhorst and Julie Silverman 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, while in a similar match Katelyn Ellison and Liz Belinski stayed together, getting past Laura and Lucy Connor 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
Skaneateles went from that result to not surrendering any points in Thursday’s match against Westhill, rolling to a 7-0 shutout of the Warriors.
Still, three of the matches went to three sets. In singles, Gage, two games from defeat, came from behind to top Katherine Missert 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, while in doubles Torisi and Maura McNeil fought off Abby Mullen and Lydia Stevenson 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Feeney and Parsons also went the limit in their 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Kaleigh Danaher and Madelyn Sherlock.
Taking just two sets, Byrne routed Emma Frost 6-0, 6-1, as Krause survived a second-set tie-breaker to defeat Katie DeVeyra 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). Belinski and Ellison got past Cameron and Mackenzie Aiello 6-4, 6-3, while Ditch and Mary McNeil topped Buccina and Yates 6-0, 6-1.
Already 3-0 on the season, Skaneateles will face Manlius-Pebble Hill and Bishop Grimes this week.
