On Tuesday, June 23, Bob Campese spent his last day at East Syracuse Minoa before stepping down from his post as athletic director and heading into retirement.
Fortunately for ESM, an experienced hand is taking over – Mike Clonan, who moves over from Central Square and will start work next week in his new post.
Clonan brings with him six years of AD experience. He held that post at Fowler High School in Syracuse from 2009 to 2011 before going to Central Square and Paul V. Moore High School, where he led the athletic department through a transition.
Earlier this year, Central Square announced that, due to lower enrollment, it was leaving the CNY Counties League, where Class AA schools are situated, and going into the Onondaga High School League’s Freedom division, home of Class A schools that include ESM.
All told, Campese spent 11 years at ESM, nine of them as assistant principal before assuming AD duties in 2013 after Bill McEachron stepped down.
Prior to that, Campese coached football for 15 years at Henninger, later serving as an assistant coach to Kevin DeParde at ESM and also serving as the long-time chairman of Section III football before handing those duties to Keith Kempney in 2014.
