Three local track and field teams were part of Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Fulton, but Westhill-Ludden enjoyed the most success.
In the boys meet, Westhill-Ludden earned 96 points to edge Cazenovia (92 points) for the top spot, while the girls Warriors had 120 points to finish second behind Skaneateles (133 points) as Jordan-Elbridge, led by Abby Gugel, was fifth on the girls side.
Jordan Roland led Westhill-Ludden, winning the high jump by clearing 5 feet 11 inches with fewer misses than Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Sage Bartlett. In the long jump, Roland was second, going 19’4” as Solvay’s Isaiah Lee (19’2”) was third, and Roland took third in the triple jump with a leap of 38’5 ¼”, where the Bearcats’ Garrett Lee was sixth.
Elsewhere in field events, Donovan Whipple was second in the shot put, throwing it 42’3 ½”, with Jimmy Kernan fourth thanks to a toss of 40’2 ½”.
Garnet Remillard earned 22 points by himself for Westhill-Ludden, as he ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:01.8 to finish second behind Hannibal’s Jason McFarland (10:38.7) as teammate Alex Ladstatter (11:20.3) gained fourth place. Remillard went 4:46.84 in the mile for third place, and then took third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:41.39, ahead of Dan DeMauro (10:49.10) for that spot.
Bryan King cleared 10’6” in the pole vault, finshing third as Solvay’s Mike Tomoroska was fourth and the Warriors’ Chris Pullano (10 feet) was sixth. Xavier Fluerinor also was fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 16.33 seconds, and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.65) and triple jump (37’10 ½”).
J-E’s Tyler Jackson was victorious in the pentathlon, earning 2,394 points as Westhill-Ludden’s Will Ringwood and Cody Badman were third and fifth, respectively, and Solvay’s Nick Ferri was between them in fourth place. Justin Quinn gave the Eagles a second-place discus throw of 124’2”.
Jackson’s teammate, Nathan Hollis, got to third place in the 800-meter run in 2:05.85, with the Warriors’ Steven Bailey fifth. Austin Milton was fourth (24.45 seconds) in the 200-meter dash and, with Hollis, Ethan Kinney and Pat Fordyce, earned third place in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.63.
Zach Rink got fifth place in the 110 high hurdles, but improved to fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.57, just ahead of Fleurinor.
The Warriors took fourth (8:56.48) and Solvay fifth in the 4×800 relay, with Westhill-Ludden also fourth in the 4×100 relay in 47.36 seconds, ahead of J-E (47.76 seconds) in sixth place. Solvay’s Jonah Cavallo took fifth in the 400-meter dash in 54.72 seconds.
During a 1-2 Westhill-Ludden sweep in the pole vault, Katherine Doherty and Noelle Coolican both cleared 9 feet, with J-E’s Theresa Dristle (6’6”) sixth. The Warriors’ Katie DeVeyra earned 2,046 points in the pentathlon to pull away and Mackenzie Powers (1,637 points) finish third. J-E’s Amelia Younis was sixth.
Megan O’Reilly (2:33.89) and Genny Corcoran (2:34.18) were second and third, respectively, in the 800, with J-E’s Emma Burns fourth in 2:33.76. Annibel Coolican went 1:10.50 in the 400 hurdles, taking second place behind Skaneateles’ Mia Grasso (1:07.94), added a fifth in the triple jump and was third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:18.9, just behind Corcoran (8:18.9) in second place.
The Warriors were third in the 4×800 (10:24.19) 4×100 (53.82 seconds) and 4×400 (4:29.40) relays, always contending, but never able to crack the top two.
J-E saw Gugel sweep the two longest distance events, covering 1,500 meters in 4:52.44 and 3,000 meters in 10:34.81, each time with Skaneateles’ Kaitlyn Neal in second place. Corcoran was fourth in the 1,500 (5:03.19), with Alaina Kenny and Carmella Carr fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000 on the Warriors’ behalf.
Solvay’s highlight came in the shot put, where Samantha Waters won with a throw of 30’4 ½” and Belle Nieves (29 feet) was second ahead of Westhill-Ludden’s Mary Kate Washburn (28’4 ¾”) in third place. But Washburh won the discus, heaving it 80’10” as her teammate, Shelly Sakran (77’3”), made her way to fourth place.
Aside from Gugel, Rebekah Blonski helped J-E with her second-place time of 16.47 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, where Solvay’s Katie Harrington was sixth, and another runner-up finish in the long jump where she went 15’10”, a jump only APW’s Kylee Bartlett (16’7”) could top.
Blonski was third in the 400 hurdles (1:10.99), with Harrington fourth in 1:11.36 as Blonski added a fifth (28.26 seconds) in the 200. Harrington, clearing 5 feet, took fourth place in the high jump.
