Boys tennis teams from Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse would both try to make deep runs in the three singles and two doubles divisions during this week’s Section III Class A tournament at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts.
In a head-to-head second singles quarterfinal, the Warriors’ Evan Vogue met the Northstars’ Connor Doren. Having beat Phyozaw Htun (Utica Proctor) 6-4, 7-6 in the first round, Doren had worked hard, and Vogue, who had a first-round bye, beat him 6-1, 6-4.
That set up a semifinal between Vogue and Fulton’s Zach Perry, which went deep into the third set before Vogue pulled it out, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. But that match took a toll, and in the finals Vogue ran up against Fayetteville-Manlius star Riley Ma and took a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Brian Emigolz made the semifinals in first singles, doing so with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Proctor’s Bryan Fam. But then Emigolz ran right into Fayetteville-Manlius’ Josh Druger, the top seed, and lost 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Oswego’s Gabriele Malossi 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation bracket final. Earlier, Sam Min lost his match to Eric Gibbs (Watertown) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
In third singles, C-NS’s Rich Dennis and Liverpool’s Leon Truong each lost their opening matches. Dennis fell to the top seed, F-M’s Jeremy Zhang, 6-0, 7-5, while Truong had a narrow 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 defeat to Fulton’s Charles Hyland.
Aaron Laviolette and Evan Maestri finished third for the Warriors in first doubles. The Liverpool pair handled Rich Llanos and Hein San (Syracuse East) 6-0, 6-1 before a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal defeat to West Genesee’s Brent and Garrett Boleslav, the top seed and eventual champions.
Recovering from that defeat, Laviolette and Maestri beat Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini and Nick Walker (Baldwinsville) 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, in a tough consolation bracket final. In that same bracket, C-NS’s Justin Kegebein and Connor Millias beat Joe Ackerman and Matt Tardugno (Rome Free Academy) 6-4, 6-1, but lost in the quarterfinals to F-M’s Taran Judge and Chris Lansing 6-1, 6-2.
Moving to second doubles, Liverpool’s Logan Enzerillo and Griffin Watson beat Anthony Salerno and Eric Shear (Fulton) 6-3, 6-4, but lost in the quarterfinals to Alex Haessig and Noah Wells (Oswego) 7-5, 6-4. C-NS’s tandem of Andrew Hughs and Kyle Spivalk had a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to F-M’s James DeSorbo and Vince Sorrentino, who went on to win the division.
