A strong regular season for the Baldwinsville boys tennis team was followed up by its participation in the Section III Class A tournament early this week at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts.
Griffin Lenkiewicz had the best showing in singles for the Bees. Competing in the third singles division, Lenkiewicz won a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Watertown’s Josh Elmer to reach the semifinals, where he faced Oswego’s Jacob Gerber.
Not stopping there, Lenkiewicz won the first set, lost the second but then prevailed in the final set to get past Gerber 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and set up a final against Fayetteville-Manlius’ Jeremy Zhang. But the match against Gerber took a toll as Lenkiewicz lost to Zhang 6-1, 6-3.
In second singles, Mason Soeder won his opening-round match over West Genesee’s Parker Ventura 6-0, 6-1, only to run into Fayetteville-Manlius star Riley Ma in the quarterfinals and lose by that same 6-0, 6-1 margin.
Gaining a third-place finish in second doubles, Austin Dukat and Scott Ferrari started with a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal shutout over Nick Lozapone and Quoc Than (Syracuse East), but then lost in the semifinals to F-M’s James DeSorbo and Vince Sorrentino 6-4, 6-4. Relegated to the consolation bracket final, Dukat and Ferrari won it over Alex Haessig and Noah Wells (Oswego) 6-1, 6-3.
Moving to first doubles, Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini and Nick Walker won their quarterfinal match over John Hoefler and Andrew Saunders (Watertown) 6-0, 6-1, but lost in the semifinals to F-M’s Taran Judge and Chris Lansing 6-1, 6-2.
Battling for third place in the consolation bracket final against Liverpool’s Aaron Laviolette and Evan Maestri, Cohen-Ciampichini and Walker dropped a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision.
