Only two wins separate the Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse team from a long-awaited Section III Class A championship, but getting those wins might prove brutal.
Given the no. 2 seed in a six-team sectional bracket, the Northstars have a bye all the way into the semifinals, but that could mean meeting no. 3 seed Christian Brothers Academy, who was ranked as high as second in the state this spring – if the Brothers beat Liverpool in Tuesday’s opening round.
Liverpool, who had struggled throughout the latter portion of its regular season, took one more hit last Tuesday night in a 9-5 defeat to Auburn at Holland Stadium.
With a chance to secure a winning record for 2015, the Warriors only trailed by one, 5-4, at halftime, but went cold in the second half.
Only Cassidy Hall scored twice, with Kasi Cabrey, Julia Sardella and Morgan Bacik earning single goals. Megan Evangelista made five saves as Auburn got four goals from Lacey Netti, plus three goals and two assists from Anna Spin as its goalie, Kayleigh Bello-Woodcock, made 10 saves.
As that went on, C-NS ripped past Syracuse 19-2 in its regular-season finale, getting a 14-1 lead by halftime and cruising from there to improve its overall record to 13-3.
Stephanie Roberts, with four goals and one assist, and Meghan Duffy, with three goals and three assists, led a well-balanced Northstars attack.
Hanna Haven managed two goals and two assists, with Bryar Cummings, Jenna Lippert, Megan Tryniski and Olivia Massena also scoring twice. Christie Hahn had a goal and two assists, with Jessica Meneilly getting one goal and one assist. Brenna Duffy and Olivia Africa also had assists.
