When the Christian Brothers Academy girls golf team lost a high-profile, high-stakes match to Jamesville-DeWitt at Butternut Creek on May 7, it knew that a chance at payback was close at hand – and the Brothers would not waste that opportunity.
In Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club in Chittenango, CBA, with a team score of 369, held off the Red Rams, who finished second at 376 despite an individual title comfortably earned by J-D’s Jung-Hye Kim.
Having recorded a nine-hole score of 32 in the league match against CBA at Butternut Creek, Kim went a full 18 holes this time and, with totals of 42 and 40, finished with an 82, five shots ahead of Marcellus freshman Mary Colella for that individual medal.
But CBA countered by earning three of the next six spots. Ninth-grader Annie Fletcher, who finished third among individuals, led her side with an 88, while senior teammates Ellie Baumgartner and Annie Caputo were fifth and sixth, respectively, as Baumgartner shot a 90 and Caputo managed a 91.
In between the CBA trio, J-D senior Alanna Jones was fifth, posting an 89. Further down the list, the Brothers’ Elisabeth Kip, a junior, tied for 12th with a 100, one shot ahead of the Rams’ Alex Catanzarite, who shared 14th place with a 101, and Kip clinched the team title, since the four lowest scores counted toward the team total.
Sophomore Mackenzie Griffith’s 107 gave CBA a fifth golfer in the top 25, even though J-D’s MaryKate Scheftic and Abby Baumgartner both bested that total, shooting 104 apiece. East Syracuse Minoa, who was seventh in the nine-team field with 457, had Audrey Rivers lead the way, shooting a 107.
CBA, J-D and ESM will all take part in the Section III championship tournament early next week, challenging defending champion Auburn and Fayetteville-Manlius, who beat Liverpool 194-227 on Tuesday at Green Lakes. Madison Kingsley led the Hornets with a nine-hole total of 42, while Audrey Putelo had a 48. Maggie Bonomo shot a 51 and Caroline Gaglione added a 53.
