Plenty of game action awaited the Solvay softball team before it could have its rematch on Wednesday with the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown side that pushed them to 10 innings on April 30.
In last Monday’s trip to Skaneateles, the Bearcats smothered the Lakers 19-1, sprinting to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings and adding an eight-run outburst in the top of the fourth, more than enough for Jackie Gardner, who gave up just two hits and struck out 12 in her first pitching stint since the APW epic.
Chelsie Deperuto smashed a pair of home run, added a double as part of a four-hit, six-RBI effort at the plate. Lauren Nichols and Nicole Antonacci each drove in three runs, combining for five hits as Gardner, Jordan Micheletti and Brandi Pidkaminy had one RBI apiece.
A non-league game at East Syracuse Minoa followed on Tuesday afternoon, and again it proved a pitching showcase for Lauren Nichols as she shut out the Spartans 13-0.
Nichols, who had thrown a no-hitter in her previous start May 1 against Hannibal, managed a one-hitter on this day, only surrendering Cassie Gabrinski’s single and a pair of walks as she accumulated 10 strikeouts by game’s end.
Solvay did most of the damage at the plate early, leading 10-0 by the third inning and seeing Molly McGuire belt a home run and double on her way to four RBIs. Delperuto went four-for-five, doubling twice, and scored three runs as Antonacci added three hits and an RBI. Nichols singled, doubled and drove in two runs as Pidkaminy and Micheletti had one RBI apiece.
Back home to play Phoenix on Wednesday, the Bearcats tore through the Firebirds 23-3 by scoring 18 runs in the first two innings – seven in the first, 11 in the second. Gardner and Nichols both hit home runs as Delperuto, Antonacci, Pidkaminy, Micheletti and Molly McGuire had two RBIs apiece.
Against those other Lakers from Cazenovia on Friday night at Onondaga Community College, it ended 21-0, Nichols throwing a two-hit shutout that saw her 15 strikeouts as, at the plate, the Bearcats nibbled away until feasting on the Lakers in an 11-run fifth inning.
As if her pitching wasn’t enough, Nichols twice connected for home runs, joining Gardner, McGuire and Michelletti earning three RBIs apiece. Delperuto and Maya Martineau also had three-hit outings, with Jackie Allen contributing a pair of RBIs. Everett also had an RBI.
