When the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team closes out its regular season next Tuesday night with a visit from state Class A no. 1-ranked West Genesee to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, it does so with some momentum gained from impressive efforts in the week leading up to it.
No effort by the state no. 10-ranked Bees all season may have compared with last Tuesday night’s home game against Liverpool, where everything clicked for B’ville in a 19-2 romp over the Warriors.
Even in a relative down season, Liverpool can be a tough opponent, but not on this night. B’ville’s attack, led again by Taylor Gebhardt and Glory Johnson, hit at will, building up a 10-1 halftime lead and did not let up even with a running clock for most of the second half.
Gebhardt finished with five goals and two assists, while Johnson scored four times and added one assist. Alex Leo and Marjorie Dehm each got two goals as Sara Goodwin earned a goal and two assists. Andrea Walker added one goal and one assist.
At Central Square on Thursday night, B’ville handled things again, rolling past the Red Hawks 18-0, a rare shutout that saw the Bees get double-digit goals in the first half and then keep the ball in its possession to make sure the Redhawks didn’t get on the board.
Johnson and Gebhardt matched point totals, Johnson earning six goals and one assist as Gebhardt had four goals and three assists. Goodwin scored twice, adding a pair of assists, while Walker, Leo, Dehm, Peyton Fleming, Anna Mazurkiewicz and Maria Henwood had one goal apiece.
Then, in a non-league game Friday night at Section V power Brighton, the Bees won again by a 10-4 margin, featuring a tough defense that never let the Barons get into the game, especially in the second half, when Brighton only managed a single goal.
Slowed down, the Bees still did enough on the other side for a comfortable victory, especially Gebhardt, who matched Brighton by herself thanks to four goals and one assist. Johnson and Leo each scored twice, with Walker and Henwood earning single tallies.
This trio of wins lifted the Bees’ record to 10-5, with only the match against West Genesee left to measure itself before the Section III playoffs start. B’ville lost, 12-7, to the Wildcats in the April 1 season opener at Fayetteville-Manlius.
