Two undefeated girls golf powers setting the pace in the Onondaga High School League finally met head-to-head, and it did not disappoint.
Jamesville-DeWitt, sporting an 8-0 record, hosted 8-0 Christian Brothers Academy at Butternut Creek on Thursday afternoon, and both sides put up tremendous individual performances – but the duo of Jung-Hye Kim and Alanna Jones helped the Red Rams inch in front and beat the Brothers 137-146.
With every shot precious, Jones set a season-best nine-hole total with a 32, and Kim matched it, tying her low round of the season. They had to, because CBA’s top duo, Annie Fletcher and Annie Caputo, also were strong, Fletcher finishing with a 33 and Caputo contributing a 34.
In order to extend the margin, J-D still needed some depth. Abby Baumgartner and Jessica Rieger provided it, Baumgartner shooting a 36 and Rieger a 37 as, on the Brothers’ side, Ellie Baumgartner finished with her own 36.
The week leading up to this showdown commenced with CBA taking on East Syracuse Minoa last Monday at Drumlins and having to work hard to defeat the Spartans 187-190.
Caputo and Fletcher each shot 43 for the Brothers, while Elisabeth Kip had a 48. On ESM’s side, Audrey River, with a 45, was just two shots behind Caputo and Fletcher, while Cassidy Bukaty and Sarah Hiltbrand both shot 48 and Hannah Owens posted a 49.
Perhaps motivated to do a bit better, CBA proceeded to Tuesday’s match against Cazenovia and posted its lowest team score of the season to topple the Lakers 168-226 to improve its mark to 8-0.
Ellie Baumgartner returned to form by posting a 38, and Caputo improved to a 41 as Fletcher contributed a 44 and Mary Frances Ierlan shot a 45. Samantha Quarantillo, with a 48, had Cazenovia’s best individual total.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manilus continued to roll through its slate of CNY Counties League opponents, starting with last Monday’s 194-226 victory over Central Square.
Playing at Greenview, Maggie Bonomo had one of her best rounds of the season, posting a 43, while Madison Kingsley shot a 48 and Caroline Gaglione added a 49. They all beat the Red Hawks’ low individual, Nicole Lightfoot, who had a 52, with Campbell Kennedy giving F-M a 54 total.
These same two teams met again 24 hours later at Green Lakers, and F-M prevailed again, 190-213, Bonomo edging out Kingsley, 45 to 46, for the low individual round. Gaglione shot her second consecutive 49 and Elizabeth Truman, with a 50, matched Central Square’s Carissa Rowland.
Making up a postponed April 20 match with Baldwinsville at Timber Banks on Wednesday, F-M handled the Bees 199-217, with Bonomo’s 43 matching the Bees’ Katie Walsh for low individual round and Kingsley, with a 46, offering ample support.
