At 5:26 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, the Manlius Fire Department responded to a house fire at Suburban Park apartments, located on Route 92 between Enders Road and E. Seneca Street in the village of Manlius.
According to Manlius Fire Deputy Chief Ray Dill, the fire started in the second floor and spread quickly through the roof of 16 units. Crews from 12 other fire departments aided at the scene.
“It was almost identical in the way the fire spread to the Carriage House apartment fire last summer,” said Dill.
No injuries were reported and all occupants of the apartments who were in the units at the time made it out quickly and safely.
According to Dill, it took about an hour to extinguish the blaze in the roof, but about two hours to completely extinguish the fire. Traffic on Route 92 was re-routed from about 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Seventeen people from 12 families living in the apartments were displaced from their homes because of the fire, but were aided with supplies by the American Red Cross and given a place to stay by the owner of the apartment complex.
Radiant heat from the fire melted part of the siding of the units across from the blaze, about 125 feet away. As of press time, a cause of the fire has not been determined.
