The second Laker encounter between the boys golf teams from Cazenovia and Skaneateles did not turn out like the first one did.
Unlike on April 20, when it was Cazenovia finishing on top by a big 213-242 margin, it was Skaneateles scraping through and prevailing by two shots, 212-214, on a sunny, cool Tuesday afternoon.
Trevor Nourse shot the low individual round of 39, and Charlie Schaffner added a 41, but Skaneateles countered with a 40 from Jake Fontana and a 42 from Nick Palma to stay close.
The key part was having three Skaneateles golfers – Briggs Carter, Jarrett McDonald and Carter Striegel – match the 43 put up by Cazenovia’s Cody Thorp. Hayden Fassett (45), Nick Becker (46) and Brandon Wells (51) all trailed Skaneateles’ Raymond Falso, who managed a 44.
Cazenovia didn’t play again until Friday afternoon, when it roared past Jordan-Elbridge 199-239 at Millstone. Nourse shot a 36, holding off Thorp (37) and Schaffner (38) as the trio pulled away from other individuals, including Fassett and Tyler Modzeleski, who each posted 44.
Moving to girls golf, Cazenovia was back on the course last Wednesday afternoon, hosting Oswego and recording a 204-236 victory over the Buccaneers.
Kelsey Fredericks and Samantha Quarantillo both shot 49 at Cazenovia Country Club to lead the Lakers, while the Buccaneers’ top individual, Kara Weiss, managed a 56.
Chittenango’s week started with a 247-260 loss to Oswego, where tough conditions at Oswego Country Club led to high numbers. Casey Smith led the Bears with a 58, two behind the Bucs’ Olivia Dowdle and tied with Weiss. Rachel Cleary had a 64, with Sara Schmidt (68), Hannah Turner (70) and Amelia Biviano (73) behind her.
Up at Butternut Creek a day later, Chittenango ran into Onondaga High School League pace-setter Jamesville-DeWitt and could not keep up in a 149-192 defeat to the Red Rams.
Cleary shot a 44, with Haley Landers and Anna Norman each posting 49. Schmidt and Emily Russell had matching totals of 50 and Smith slumped to a 51, but they all trailed J-D star Jung-Hye Kim, who rolled to a 32 with help from Alanna Jones (38) and Alex Catanzarite (39).
Then the other OHSL front-runner, CBA, came to Woodcrest on Thursday and beat Chittenango 175-251. Cleary led her team, but only had a 60 in front of Mia Biviano (62) and Haley Walters (64), and five CBA golfers shot 48 or better, led by Ellie Baumgartner, who posted a 40.
On Friday, against visiting Westhill, the Bears fell to the Warriors 207-243. Schmidt, with a 56, beat out Smith (62) and Cleary (63) on Chittenango’s side, while Westhill featured Shannon Bunce and her top individual score of 46.
