Steeled by the rough experience of back-to-back defeats to Massapequa and Garden City, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team found things far more hospitable against local opposition.
First, the Lakers had doubled up Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes 20-10 on April 10. Then, three nights later, Skaneateles put together its best start of the season at Westhill, leaving a strong foe far behind them on the way to a 17-6 victory.
During the entire first half, the pattern kept repeating itself. Skaneateles would win the draws, and then set up an attack where, eventually, it got one in the net, usually from the stick of Kyla Sears or Hannah Powers.
By the time they reached the half, the Lakers had a 12-2 lead, and would cruise from there, Sears and Powers both finishing with five goals as Sears tacked on four assists and Powers a single assist.
In support, Tate Green scored twice, with Catie Woodruff adding one goal and one assist. Molly Newton, Sophie Kush, Makena Gorman and Bailey Herr also took turns finding the net as, in goal, Emily Baldwin picked up six saves.
Good as this was, the Lakers proved even more effective in Thursday night’s game against Jordan-Elbridge at Hyatt Stadium, roaring past the Eagles 20-4.
What made it even more enticing for Skaneateles fans was the way the attack spread out in a way it hadn’t done this season, proving far less dependent on Sears and Powers, who still managed three goals apiece and combined for five assists.
Hannah Logan, for one, stepped up with a three-goal hat trick. Four others – Bailey Herr, Mae McGlynn, Catie Woodruff and Abby Kuhns – each scored twice, with Herr and Kuhns adding assists. Newton picked up the other goal.
Skaneateles would meet its fellow Lakers from Cazenovia on Tuesday night, and visit Tully before a terrific non-league matchup with Cicero-North Syracuse on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Northstars knocked off West Genesee 12-11 last Tuesday when it erased an 11-7 second-half deficit and won it on Hanna Haven’s goal with four seconds left.
