Even though it was early in the season, and despite the fact that plenty of time remains to work on things that aren’t going well, the Cicero-North Syracuse did not like the taste of defeat one bit.
In its first action since a triple-overtime loss to Honeoye Falls-Lima on March 28, the Northstars had a strong all-around effort against Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday night at Bragman Stadium, steaming to a 17-6 victory over the Hornets.
It helped, no doubt, that C-NS had played twice, while F-M was opening its season. Still, the Northstars were relentless, playing at a fast pace and roaring to a 9-4 halftime lead.
Then, in the second half, C-NS worked the margin to double digits, with Hanna Haven and Bryar Cummings at the forefront as the pair each finished with four goals and one assist.
Meghan Duffy also had five points, producing three goals and two assists. Megan Tryniski and Jessica Meneilly both scored twice, while Samantha Tortora had one goal and one assist. Christie Hahn had the other goal as Olivia Africa and Jenna Lippert tacked on assists. Combined, goalies Bri Stahrr and Lauren Gilbert made 10 saves.
Liverpool, who had edged past Westhill in its season opener March 28, could not follow up that success in last Wednesday’s game against Carthage, falling to the Comets 8-5.
A great deal of the Warriors’ offense was produced by Kasi Cabrey, who finished with four of her team’s five goals. Julia Sardella had the other, assisting on one of Cabrey’s tallies.
Megan Evangelista made seven saves, but Carthage did enough throughout the evening to go out in front and stay there. Alexis Smith had three assists for the Comets, spreading her passes to Mia Darroch, Peyton Romig and Jacquelyn Williams, who had two goals apiece.
Both teams played at home on Saturday – Liverpool taking on the combined Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes side, C-NS going up against another Section V opponent, Webster Thomas.
Each side won, too. At LHS Stadium, the Warriors proved impressive in the second half of a 13-6 victory that was just a one-goal game, 4-3, going into halftime.
Outscoring Ludden/Grimes 9-3 the rest of the way, Liverpool saw Sardella pour in four goals, with Cabrey and Jen Kershner notching three goals apiece. Megan Fitzpatrick had a goal and two assists as Cassidy Hall and Krystyna Sterio also scored. Taylor Fahey and Veronica Brancato earned assists.
Back at Bragman Stadium, C-NS turned aside Webster Thomas 15-4, never letting the Titans get into the argument as it rolled out to a 7-1 halftime lead and expanded the margin beyond double digits in the second half.
Tortora, with four assists, set up an attack where Duffy, Cummings and Stephanie Roberts each finished with three goals. Duffy added two assists as Haven and Africa both scored twice. Tryniski and Meneilly earned single goals and Jenna Lippert tacked on an assist.
