Winter may be winding down but not before doing some last-minute damage.
At least four buildings in the village of Liverpool suffered roof damage over the past couple of weeks as temperatures rose and melting snow and ice became a hazard, according to village Codes Enforcement Officer Bill Reagan.
The roof collapsed on a house at 209 Alder St., which had been condemned by the village a few years ago.
“It’s a good thing there was no one in that house when it happened,” Reagan said.
An entire garage fell to the ground at 305 Third St., and most of the roof was torn off a 60-by-80-foot back-lot storage building at Liverpool Lumber on North Willow Street.
On the night of March 10 and 11, the front porch roof collapsed at 721 Oswego St.
Deputy Codes Enforcement Officer Kurt Field said one thing led to another.
“When heavy chunks of ice fell from the top roof onto the lower porch roof,” Field said, “it was just too much weight for it to handle.”
