A month after his tremendous regular season ended, Baldwinsville boys bowler Tyler Watchus received his reward by competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament at Strike-N-Spare Lanes in Mattydale.
Watchus was part of the Section III All-Star team that competed in Sunday’s portion of the tournament, joined by Andrew Bourgeois (Camden), Robert Kinville ( New York Mills), Josh Cloute (Cicero-North Syracuse), Mark Morreale (Whitesboro) and Ryan Aylesworth (Homer).
Struggling at the outset, Watchus had a 154 opening game, but improved to 211 in the second game and added a 194 to complete the morning session. Then, in the afternoon, Watchus followed up a 203 with his best game of the day, a 224, and closed it out with a 189.
The total pinfall of 1,175, and an average of 195.83, left Watchus in 18th place out of 66 bowlers. Of the Section III bowlers, only Bourgeois fared better, with an 1,188 series and 237 high game.
Together, Watchus and the Section III team finished sixth out of 11 sides, with a pinfall of 5,745. Section XI (Suffolk County, Long Island) won with 6,219, beating Section VI (Western New York) by 234 pins for that top spot, and Adam Zimmerman from that Section XI squad took individual honors with a 1,345 series, which included a 770 afternoon session.
