A deep, diverse lineup of talent helped the Jamesville-DeWitt girls indoor track and field team claim victory in Thursday night’s Onondaga High School League Division I championships.
Returning to SRC Arena, where it won the Section III Class A title a week earlier, the Red Rams got 137 points, beating out nine other teams as Westhill-Bishop Ludden (97 points) finished second and East Syracuse Minoa, with 32 points, was sixth.
Alexandria Payne had a central role for J-D, starting in the 55-meter hurdles, where in 9.34 seconds she beat out Homer’s Keiana Adkins (9.56 seconds) for the top spot.
Then, in the 300-meter dash, Payne won again, in 43.71 seconds, with Alexia Carr (45.88) taking fourth place for the Rams, and she later cleared 4 feet 8 inches to take fourth place in the high jump.
Patrece Martin also won twice, starting in the long jump, where she went 16 feet to beat Mexico’s Jordan Maynes (15’11 ¾”) by a quarter of an inch. Then, in the triple jump, Martin won again, her leap of 34’2” nearly two feet ahead of the field as Addo was fifth, going 31’ ½”.
Hannah Butler helped J-D prevail in the 1,500-meter run with her time of 5:02.83, while Samantha Jaffe was third in 5:28.08. Earlier, Jaffe was second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:44.61, while Ayla Erwin (12:16.67) was fourth.
Moving to the 4×800 relay, Butler, Casey Keane, Elena Haarer and Alisa Salbert beat the field with a time of 10:38.85, as no one else was under 11 minutes. ESM’s quartet of Natalie Marra, Juliette Miller, Olivia Ravera and Kassandra Burr was third in 11:02.72.
J-D’s Kaillee Philleo, Guine Nabinger, Addobea Addo and Katie Lutz were second (4:39.60) to Westhill-Ludden (4:36.53) in the 4×400 relay, with ESM’s quartet of Ravera, Burr, Savanna Taylor and Ciara Short third in 4:45.18. The Spartans did finish fourth (1:59.18), ahead of the Rams (1:59.82), in the 4×200 relay.
In field events, J-D cleaned up, starting with Martin and continuing in the shot put, where Mariah Williams’ toss of 30’ gave her a victory as teammate Jessica Pace was fourth, heaving it 26’11”.
Sara Signorelli was second in the pole vault, clearing 8’6” to finish behind Westhill-Ludden’s Katherine Doherty (9’6”) as Gabrielle Tanksley (7’6”) was fourth.
ESM did get a win in the 1,000-meter run, where Marra posted 3:06.21 to hold off Haarer (3:07.48) as Haarer’s teammate, Megan Brown, was fifth in 3:27.43. Miller took fourth in the 600-meter run in 1:47.60, ahead of Haarer in sixth and Casey Keane (1:47.91) in fifth place. Montgomery also was fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.91 seconds.
CBA, competing in the OHSL Division II meet, finished third with 49 points behind Cazenovia and Skaneateles, who finished 1-2, just as they had done in the Section III Class B meet.
Anna Schug swept the sprints, taking the 55-meter dash in 7.47 seconds over Skaneateles’ Amanda Wetmore (7.71 seconds), and then going 1-2 in the 300, winning in 41.07 seconds as Kiana Ferguson was second in 44.10 seconds. Schug, Ferguson, Anna Langlois and Grace O’Connor were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:53 flat.
Also for the Brothers, Skylar Decker was second (9.60 seconds) to Hannibal’s Taylor Dence (9.16 seconds) in the 55 hurdles. Lucy Person was third in the 1,000 in 3:25.12. Julie McInvale took sixth in the 1,500, while O’Connor was seventh in the 600.
J-D finished fourth, with 42 points, one point ahead of ESM (41 points) in fifth place during the Onondaga High School League Division I championships. Westhill-Ludden edged Solvay, 79 points to 77, for the top spot.
Patrick Dye won the mile in 4:40.90 to pull away from Fowler’s Solomon Lawrence (4:47.06), and Dye went 2:46.04 in the 1,000, a close second to Lawrence (2:45.46).
Will Cote went 6.93 seconds in the 55 sprint and took second place behind Mexico’s Kyler Fenton (6.79 seconds), took third in the triple jump with a top attempt of 40’7 ½” and added a fifth-place long jump of 19’1”.
Austin Philleo, Will Rodriguez, Tom Corcoran and Quentin Curry went 4:00.28 in the 4×400, settling for fourth place, while Philleo, Curry, Joe DiDomenico and Lennier Stynes were fifth (9:36.40) in the 4×800.
Henry Middleton took sixth in the shot put, heaving it 37’3”.
ESM’s lone victory came in the 55 hurdles, where Jeremy McGrath went 8.11 seconds to finish half a second ahead of Oswego’s Christian Cabanlig (8.64 seconds). McGrath also got to third place in the 55 sprint in 6.99 seconds.
The Spartans’ Jared Henry, in the 600, was a close second (1:33.13) to Westhill-Ludden’s Xavier Fleurinor (1:32.37). ESM also saw Matt Young finish third in the 3,200 in 10:49.97 and fourth in the mile (4:58.67), while Jim Kenyon took fourth (2:53.65) in the 1,000. Tommy Huynh was fifth in the pole vault (9 feet) as ESM was sixth in the 4×200.
CBA’s Tommy O’Connor was third in the OHSL Division II 55 hurdles in 8.89 seconds. Brendan Keeney was fifth in the 600 in 1:31.59, while John Frasier was sixth (35’5”) in the shot put.
