Even though no one thought the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey teams’ 2-1 defeat to New Hartford on Jan. 7 was a bad loss, it still cost the Brothers a bit.
When the next state Division II rankings were released, CBA/J-D found itself at no. 7, down from its high point of no. 3.
Needless to say, it didn’t sit well with the Brothers, who proceeded to blow out each of its opponents in the week that followed and, at long last, returned to home ice.
To start with, CBA/J-D visited Crisafuli Rink, better known as “The Fort”, for last Tuesday’s game at Oswego, and with fast starts and finishes put away the Buccaneers in an impressive 7-0 shutout.
Less than six minutes into the first period, Ryan Durkin got CBA/J-D on the board. It stayed 1-0, with Oswego trying to hang in there, until Zach Taylor got free on a breakaway and put one in the net just 27 seconds before intermission.
Now up 2-0, the Brothers doubled that margin in the second period with goals from Tanner Coleman and Lucas Relkin, with Taylor contributing a key assist on Relkin’s tally.
Just as it did in the first period, CBA/J-D scored as the second period wound down, as with 15 seconds left Coleman made it 5-0.
Taylor had already assisted on three goals, and would tack on a fourth assist when he fed Kane Alletzhauser for a power-play goal early in the third period. Less than a minute later, Cole Fowler became the sixth different CBA/J-D player to find the net.
Back home at Onondaga Nation Arena Thursday night, the Brothers faced Ontario Bay, and it proved even more lopsided as CBA/J-D smashed the Storm 11-2.
This was the Brothers’ first home game in more than a month – since way back on Dec. 12, when it beat Cortland-Homer 5-2. All told, CBA/J-D had played eight straight times away from Nedrow, and, after taking the ice amid strobe lights, showed right away that it was quite glad to be back.
Relkin scored just 30 seconds into the first period, with Coleman adding a goal less than three minutes later. From there, it stayed quiet until a second period when CBA/J-D unloaded for six unanswered goals.
When Relkin netted his second goal early in that period, Durkin, with the assist, earned his 100th career point. Fowler hit on a pair of goals in that frame, with McGuire, Coleman and Sam Mueller also finding the net.
Ontario Bay did break up the shutout in the third period, but Alletzhauser countered with a short-handed goal, and in the last two minutes Durkin converted again on the power play and Fowler, just before the horn, scored to complete his hat trick.
McGuire, Mueller and Lynch Raby each finished with three assists, while Taylor and Durkin each got two assists. Jack Austin, Grayson Burns, Jamie St. Amour and Ben McCreary also had assists.
On Friday night, Fayetteville-Manlius hosted Rome Free Academy at Cicero Twin Rinks and lost, 5-2, in a game that was close until the Black Knights put up three unanswered goals in the second period, with J.T. Entelisano (two goals, one assist) at the forefront.
The Hornets saw Trevor Pokines earn one goal and assist on the other, by Garrett Zogby, with Will Healy and J.P. Ciappa also getting assists. Erik Badger, playing in goal, recorded 24 saves.
F-M would meet Mohawk Valley on Wednesday, a night before CBA/J-D hosts Whitesboro in its lone game of the week and only contest in a 15-day stretch late in January.
