Though it had just one home meet in the first full week of 2015 and lost it, the Baldwinsville boys swim team at least had the honor and privilege to witness Liverpool up close.
That came on Thursday night, and while the Bees did gain a handful of individual titles, two each from John Sidorakis and Ryan App, it still lost, 55-39, to the Warriors.
Sidorakis started out in the 200-yard individual medley by posting a time of two minutes, 19.76 seconds, enough to pull away from Liverpool’s Rob Hinkey (2:24.70) for first place.
Later in the meet, Sidorakis had a strong effort in the 100 backstroke, going 1:01.92 that led to a second title as the Warriors’ Tom Griffin (1:04.76) took the second spot.
Handling the sprint events, App would go 24.50 seconds in the 50 freestyle to pull away from teammate Clayton Dombrowsky (25.33 seconds), and then turn his attention to the 100 breaststroke, where in 1:12.51 App held off Liverpool’s Trevor Case (1:13.77) to win.
The Warriors won every other event, though, including a sweep of the 200 medley (1:48.26), 200 freestyle (1:35.20) and 400 freestyle (3:47.83) relays. The Bees’ Michael Boyce was second (2:03.08) to J.J. Ross (2:01.27) in the 200 freestyle, with Dombrowsky second in the 100 fresetyle (57.47 seconds) and Kevin Atkinson second (1:08.27) to Luke Rogers (1:01.53) in the 100 butterfly.
Before that, the Bees paid a visit to New Hartford last Tuesday night, and did not win an event until the latter stages of a 97-77 defeat to the Spartans.
Dan Watkins (1:08.33) and Atkinson (1:08.71) did go 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, and Atkinson joined App, Boyce and Dombrowsky as the Bees posted a top time of 4:12.77 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Otherwise, B’ville had to settle for a series of runner-up finishes. Jonathan Oad went 5:41.53 in the 500 freestyle, edged out at the wire by New Hartford’s Jack Lamb (5:41.32), after going 2:24.24 in the 200 IM behind Noah Farmer (2:06.18), who also won the 100 breaststroke.
App, for his part, would challenge in the 50 freestyle and finish in 25.10 seconds, but New Hartford’s Seamus Kearney (24.89 seconds) prevailed, with Dombrowsky going 56.72 second in the 100 freestyle, second to Kearney’s 54.91 seconds.
B’ville, who fell to 2-5 on the season with this pair of defeats, competes twice more next week, meeting Fayetteville-Manlius Tuesday at Cazenovia College and visiting Fulton two nights later.
