Frigid weather on Wednesday forced most of the area’s boys indoor track and field teams to sit at home and not compete in the George Constantino Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.
However, Fayetteville-Manlius was able to compete, and with 137 points took top honors over Cicero-North Syracuse, who had 107 points. Jamesville-DeWitt (47 points), CBA (21 points) and East Syracuse Minoa (20 points) also took part.
Kyle Barber won twice for the Hornets, as he claimed the 600-meter run in one minute, 22.79 seconds in front of J-D’s Patrick Dye in fifth place (1:32.47) and teammate David Blitz in sixth. Then, in the 1,000-meter run, Barber, in 2:40.59, and teammate Jon Abbott (2:41.17) went 1-2, with Dye in sixth place.
Peter Ryan prevailed in the mile in 4:25.91, with Adam Hunt fourth in 4:39.96 and CBA’s Dominic Morganti (4:51.95) in sixth. Bryce Millar went 9:15.90 to pull away in the 3,200-meter run away from Patrick Perry (9:46.35) in second place. Perry, Ryan, Riley Hughes and Adam Hunt were second (8:48.13) to Liverpool (8:42.25) in the 4×800 relay.
Parker Noble, going 19 feet in the long jump, beat out J-D’s Will Cote (18’5 ½”) for the victory as the Hornets’ Ben Testani finished sixth. Cote countered by winning the triple jump, going 39’1” as teammate Almighty Bornfreedom was fourth, behind F-M’s Dan Ryu (35’5”) in third place.
Also for the Hornets, Kyle Bronson had a winning shot put throw of 44’10 ½”, with Taylor Smach fourth (40’7 ¾”) and J-D teammates Henry Middleton and Evan Baxter fifth and sixth, respectively.
Ed Cheathen was second (37.78 seconds) and Jules Ngadula took third (38.05 seconds) in the 300-meter dash, with Cheathen, Ngadula, Noble and Hamza El Habbal second in the 4×400 relay in 3:46.82 to C-NS’s 3:44.01, with CBA third (4:00.23) and ESM (4:08.90) fourth.
El Habbal, Testani, Vincent Perry and Armondo Adrian were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:42.90, where J-D (1:48.92) settled for fourth place.
J-D also saw Jesse Johnson clear 5’6” in the high jump to take second place, with F-M’s Tim Poole third (5’4”) and ESM’s Connor Harrigan fifth. Alex Le gave the Red Rams a fourth-place pole vault clearance of 8’6”, just ahead of the Spartans’ Scott Hyunh in fifth place.
ESM’s Jeremy McGrath was victorious in the 55-meter hurdles, his time of 8.21 seconds enough to hold off C-NS’s Edward Mahana (8.51 seconds) as CBA’s Tommy O’Connor finished third in 9.14 seconds and F-M’s Sean Donlon was sixth.
For the Brothers, the best finish came in the 55-meter dash, where Tom SanGiacomo was second, in 6.85 seconds, to Auburn’s Leon Atkins (6.78), as J-D’s Will Cote (6.94 seconds) claimed fourth place.
Since the girls Constantino meet was not until later in the month, some local teams went to Colgate University’s Sanford Field House last Tuesday for the Section III Field Event and Distance Carnival.
And that included F-M stars Sophia Ryan, Christabel Ezidiegwu and Savannah Pidkaminy. Ryan, in 10 minutes, 28.63, held off Skaneateles’ Kaitlyn Neal (10:30 flat) to win the girls 3,000-meter run, with Jenna Farrell seventh in 10:59.32 and Reilly Madsen (11:17.36) in eighth place.
Ezidiegwu, contending in the triple jump, went 34 feet 2 inches in the triple jump, edged out of the title by New Hartford’s Maya Hammonds, who went 34’3”, one inch further. The Hornets’ Megan Josephson finished 17th.
Finally, in the pole vault, Pidkaminy rose to second place, clearing 8 feet, a number only West Canada Valley’s Abigail Esty (8’6”) would top as Pidkaminy’s teammate, Alexandra Johnson, cleared 6’6” and earned fourth place. Ezidiegwu also tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 4’8”.
Riley Hughes was third in the boys 3,200-meter run in 10:06.36, while Brendan Pearl (10:44.17) got 13th place. Smach (37’7”) beat out Bronson (37’6”) for fifth place in the boys weight throw, while Savannah Pidkaminy was 12th in the girls weight throw, heaving it 23’4”. Bronson tied for 10th in the boys high jump.
