A strong season-long effort by Fayetteville-Manlius wrester Tristan Broddus continued when he claimed the 152-pound championship during Saturday’s Phoenix Round Robin – and this time around, teammate Muhammad-Mukhtar Qubasy joined him in the winner’s circle.
Broddus won all four of his bouts in the round-robin portion, setting up a final against Baldwinsville’s Connor Ross. And while it proved close, Broddus did just enough to pull out a 5-3 decision over Ross and go to the top of the podium for the third time in as many weeks.
Qusaby also blazed through his preliminary matches in order to make it to the title bout against Mattituck’s Dylan Marlborough, who was active throughout the final, but not enough to keep up with Qubasy, who won a 14-7 decision to finish first.
Other than that, the Hornets were fairly quiet in Phoenix, picking up 38 points to finish eighth in a 10-team field, with East Syracuse-Minoa (37 points) in ninth place. Mattituck, from Long Island, scored 193 points to top Liverpool (147 points) and the rest of the field.
For the Spartans, Sam LeGro made it to the 160-pound final, only to fall to Mattituck’s James Hoeg in a 16-0 technical fall. Jeff Loder was fourth at 138 pounds, while Medo Pugonja grabbed fourth place at 170 pounds and Dan Brabham was fourth at 285 pounds. Alex Regan (152 pounds) finished sixth.
ESM went from there to a non-league meet against Skanetaeles on Monday afternoon, and claimed just three of 15 bouts during a 64-18 defeat to the Lakers.
LeGro, moving up to 170, pinned Josh O’Hara in 1:37, while Joe Monteleone won his match at 220 pounds, pinning Jon Ricklefs in 1:15. Dan Crossman claimed a forfeit at 160 as Loder lost, 7-0, to Maverick Janes and Regan took a 10-0 defeat to Andrew Newton.
