Though the West Genesee boys swim team had gained a 2-0 start, it still had not faced the top sides in the Section III ranks. And when the Wildcats encountered one of them in Thursday night’s meet against Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA, it did quite well in the relays, but could not make up for losing most of the individual races in a 96-86 defeat to the Red Rams. It didn’t help the Wildcats that a tune-up against New Hartford two days earlier was postponed, and will get made up Jan. 23. Still, WG was catching J-D/CBA at a good time, with the Rams in the midst of a stretch of three meets in four days and without one of its top swimmers, Kevin Potocki, in the lineup due to illness. All went fine in the opening race, the 200 medley relay, where the Wildcats’ quartet of Matt O’Donnell, Sean Hagadorn, Colin Riley and Evan Tuthill prevailed in one minute, 54.50 seconds. In fact, WG would sweep the relays. Tuthill joined Nate Gdula, Mike Gilheney and Jacob Jones as the Wildcats won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.91, and to close the meet, Gdula, O’Donnell, Gilheney and Hagadorn were victorious in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:40.65. But the Wildcats won just two individual events – the 100 freestyle, where Gdula, in 54.05 seconds, edged out J-D/CBA’s Dan McGann (54.39 seconds), and the 100 backstroke, where O’Donnell prevailed in 1:08.90 over the Rams’ Owen Farchione (1:09.82). To win, J-D/CBA saw a pair of its swimmers claim two races apiece. Casey Sawyer was victorious in the 50 freestyle (23.19 seconds to Hagadorn’s 24.10) and 100 butterfly, where he held off O’Donnell, 56.40 seconds to O’Donnell’s 57.04. Meanwhile, Sargon Bebla helped the Rams when he won the 200 indivdiual medley (2:26.29) and 100 breaststroke, where his 1:12.62 fended off Ryan Hagadorn’s 1:15.68. Gdula, in 2:04.29, was second to J-D/CBA’s Jeff Gabriel (1:59.53) in the 200 freestyle. WG competes twice next week, facing Cicero-North Syracuse at Le Moyne College on Tuesday and hosting Fulton on Friday in advance of the holiday break.
