Though not possessing a long win streak like their female counterparts, the West Genesee boys swim team remains a strong program and will contend once more for CNY Counties League and Section III honors. In last Tuesday night’s season opener, the Wildcats faced Baldwinsville and got contributions from plenty of swimmers during a 93-88 victory over the Bees. To start with, WG prevailed in the 200-yard medley relay, seeing Nate Gdula, Matt O’Donnell, Sean Hagadorn and Colin Riley post a quick time of one minute, 52.09 seconds. Then, on his own, Gdula went 54.34 seconds in the 100 freestyle to beat B’ville’s John Sidorakis (56.34 seconds) by exactly two seconds, while O’Donnell prevailed in the 100 butterfly in 57.63 seconds, with Riley in second place. Peter Bowman amassed 207.45 points on the diving board, winning that event as Cody Collins (168.1 points) slid into second place. Hagadorn was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.55, while Mike Gilheney was second (2:07.54) to B’ville’s Michael Boyce (2:03.68) in the 200 freestyle. Going to Mexico on Friday night, the Wildcats would lose many of the individual races, but do more than enough with its depth and relay teams to beat the Tigers 101-83. Improvement was evident from the outset as Gdula, O’Donnell, Hagadorn and Brian Salmons went quicker in the 200 medley relay, winning in 1:51.48. Then Mexico won the next four individual races before O’Donnell edged the Tigers’ Jacob Zedack, 57.35 seconds to 57.54, in the 100 butterfly, with Riley in third place. Gdula pulled away in the 100 freestyle in 55.14 seconds more than three seconds quicker than Mexico’s Robert Pritchard, who was runner-up in 58.25 seconds. Hagadorn, posting a time of 1:08.48, won the 100 breaststroke, with Barrett (1:14.02) taking the second spot. Salmons, going 1:10.02 in the 100 backstroke, led a 1-2-3 sweep with Riley second in 1:11.07 and Dan Pesci (1:11.45) in third place. Peter Bowman (205.3 points) and Cody Collins (192.15 points) were second and third, respectively, in diving behind the Tigers’ Noah Galluzzo (342.8 points), while Gilheney took second (2:06.09) behind Dan Mullen (2:01.59) in the 200 freestyle. Barrett was third in the 200 IM and Hagadorn third in the 50 freestyle, but no one could catch Hagadorn when he paired with Gdula, O’Donnell and Tuthill to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:47.47. WG would go for three in a row Tuesday against New Hartford before Thursday’s showdown with Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA.
