There’s a real chance that the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse football teams could meet up in the opening round of the Section III Class AA playoffs.
For now, though, both teams are quite content with what they’ve accomplished, whether it’s the Warriors assured of the top seed from the AA-1 division or the Northstars just making it back to the post-season after a prolonged absence.
Liverpool moved to 6-0 on the season, and earned its third shutout of 2014, by blanking Nottingham 39-0 Friday night at LHS Stadium. Not far away, on the new turf at Bragman Stadium, C-NS parlayed a big first quarter into a comfortable 42-22 victory over Fowler.
Even with its undefeated start and rise to the top of the AA-1 standings, Liverpool still hadn’t garnered a state ranking. But that didn’t seem to bother the Warriors too much, nor did the challenge from a 2-3 Nottingham side still trying to keep playoff hopes alive.
With the Bulldogs stacking the line of scrimmage to try and stop Jaydakis Scott, quarterback Ricky Sisto threw over them in the first quarter, resulting in a 39-yard scoring pass to Dietrick Roberson.
Still, Scott was the main engine for the Warriors’ offense, and he found the end zone from seven yards out in the second period. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s quick, aggressive defense continued to shut down Nottingham, so a 14-0 halftime lead seemed far more imposing.
But Liverpool didn’t take any chances, adding to that total in the third quarter thanks to Mike Wright’s 22-yard field goal and Scott’s four-yard scoring run, plus a two-point pass from Jordan Caviness to Zack Khatib.
Caviniss, on a three-yard run, and Rashon Crenshaw, on a four-yard dash, put in late TD’s, all part of an attack where Scott finished with 165 yards on the ground, down from his big efforts against C-NS and CBA the previous two weeks, but still more than adequate.
As this went on, C-NS pursued its first win on the newly-installed Field Turf at Bragman Stadium, having fallen to Henninger 32-14 the week before on the night the turf was dedicated. Fowler, with an 0-5 record, would struggle from the outset against the Northstars.
On its initial drive, C-NS grabbed a 7-0 lead with Nick Golembieski’s three-yard TD run and Connor Evans’ extra point. Within minutes, that margin doubled as Evans, taking over at quarterback for Dom Fiorini, threw his first scoring pass of the season, 42 yards to Keegan Wright, and Daquan Mathis added a 13-yard scoring run.
That quickly made it 21-0, but the Northstars were far from content. Golembieski, reclaiming some of his early-season big-play magic, took off on a 65-yard TD run, and Evans added a second TD pass, a two-yard strike to Zack Blake.
Thus, it was 35-0 before Fowler got on the board, and even when it did, the Northstars had an answer, Mathis scoring his second TD on a two-yard run in the third quarter.
Though assured of a playoff spot, C-NS could still change its seeding if it can go on the road next Friday and knock off state Class AA no. 17-ranked Baldwinsville, who started 5-0 before a 26-14 defeat to Henninger on Friday.
Liverpool, meanwhile, hosts West Genesee, coming off a 49-6 defeat to CBA, as it attempts to finish off its first undefeated regular season since 1998, the last time the Warriors won a sectional title.
