Have you signed up to be chased by zombies yet?
The second annual Hallowrun for Hunger will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Aspen Shelter at Oneida Shores. Organized by Cicero-North Syracuse High School junior Liz Westfall, the event features a 5K run-walk in which student zombies from C-NS will chase runners as they make their way along the course. The event will raise money for the Food Bank of Central New York, the main food supplier to 268 emergency food programs in 11 counties in the state.
Last year’s event, which featured made-up student zombies who chased costumed runners around the course, attracted 270 participants and raised enough to fund 15,000 meals at the Food Bank. Westfall hopes to up that number to 20,000 this year.
The event will also feature a free run for kids at 10 a.m. Runners in the Free Kids Fun Run should register by emailing the child’s name and age to [email protected]. Kids under 5 will take part in a shorter race, while kids 6 to 12 will run half a mile. The kids’ run is flat and zombie-free.
Runners in the 5K are encouraged to attend packet pickup from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Fleet Feet Sports on Route 31 in Clay. Race day pickup will also be offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Oneida Shores. Runners can wear costumes as long as they do not interfere with their ability to see or to run. Trophies will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K, as well as the top three finishers in the kids’ race.
If you’d like to donate to the Food Bank but you’re not a runner, you can do so at the website, as well. For more information, visit hallowrun.com or email [email protected].
