Baldwinsville’s best track and field athletes would find their way to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman to compete in three different events during last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
On the girls side, B’ville senior Emily Soeder had a strong showing in the high jump. Clearing 5 feet 4 inches, Soeder earned a top-10 finish among Division I (large school) entrants and finished 14th overall, while Bethlehem’s Grace Smith won the high jump by clearing 5’7” with fewer misses than Alden’s Hailey Rospierski.
Also, the Bees’ 4×400 relay team took their turn on Friday afternoon. Senior Cierra Allen, joined by juniors Marissa Lathrop and Rachel Miller, plus sophomore Katie Wicks, finished in three minutes, 57.81 seconds, putting them in 10th place among Division I competitors. Suffern (Section I) won the state title with a clocking of 3:48.59.
Meanwhile, senior Jack Martin had to wait until Saturday morning to run in the boys 3,000-meter steeplechase. In his final high-school race, Martin finished in exactly 10:06, putting him 12th in his heat, 24th overall and 14th in the Division I portion. Hilton’s Tyler Ranke won the state steeplechase in a clocking of 9:11.24.
