The Van Buren Town Board met on May 20 to discuss and act on the following issues:
Stormwater
The board approved supporting participation in the Central New York Stormwater Coalition Staff Services and Education Compliance Assistance Program. Town engineer Jason Hoy, who is president of the CNY Stormwater Coalition, said the $3,600 annual cost to the town to participate is worth the money. Organizers do all the education outreach and provide training for municipal officials.
Additionally, Hoy said the 2013-14 MS4 Annual Report for Stormwater is available to the public and will be online in the next week or so. Visit the town website at townofvanburen.com.
Second annual Alpine Challenge
Councilor Tony Saraceni addressed the second annual Alpine Challenge to be held Saturday, May 31 at Van Burn Park. The challenge is sponsored by the Friends of Van Buren Central Park. Registration starts t 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9:30 a.m. There is a two-race series, which means times from the May 31 race will be combined with the race to be held in August to determine the winner. Proceeds from the race will go to fund projects in Van Buren Park.
Memorial Day Parade
The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Councilor Patricia Dickman is encouraging everyone to attend the ceremony at Riverview Cemetery following the parade.
Milling in lower Seneca Knolls
Highway Superintendent Doug Foster said construction season is underway. Milling in lower Seneca Knolls begins this week.
Foster reminded residents that millings are available for purchase. He said there has been a good demand for them so far with nearly 30 loads delivered. Residents who are interested should contact the town clerk’s office at 635-3010 for information.
Summer day camp grant
Supervisor Claude Sykes commended Recreation Supervisor Heidi Anders on obtaining a grant for a summer day camp for kids 10 to 14 years old with autism. Sykes said she received $14,000 in funding for this and appreciated her incentive in writing the grant.
The board will next meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 at Van Buren Town Hall, 7575 Van Buren Road in Baldwinsville.
