On May 8, Central New York’s very own Hope for Heather (hopeforheather.org) joins the global movement to raise awareness about ovarian cancer by pledging to spread the word about ovarian cancer during the second annual World Ovarian Cancer Day (WOCD). Each year, nearly a quarter of a million women around the world are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and the disease is responsible for 140,000 deaths annually. Statistics show that just 45 percent of women with ovarian cancer are likely to survive for five years, compared with 89 percent of women with breast cancer. Women across the globe are similarly affected by ovarian cancer, no matter the stage of development their nation is in. There is no test for the early detection of ovarian cancer, a disease characterized around the world by a lack of awareness of symptoms and late stage diagnosis. As part of our participation with World Ovarian Cancer Day, Hope for Heather representatives will be at Café 407 in Liverpool from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and at ShowOffs Boutique on Armory Square from 2 to 4 p.m. They will have ovarian cancer information to share, survivor chat, and light refreshments. For more information, please contact Frieda Weeks at 657-7879, or email media spokeswoman Farah Jadran at [email protected], or call her at 329-9372.
