It only figured that the month of April would end for the Cazenovia track and field teams with another meet affected by weather.
Scheduled to go to Phoenix last Wednesday afternoon, the Lakers waited out heavy rain, and then held the meet 24 hours later, on the first day of May.
Before that, though, the Lakers did have its three-way meet with Solvay and Norwich last Monday afternoon, and Cazenovia won both sides of the girls meet, routing the Bearcats 103-38 and edging past the Purple Tornado 73-68.
Ashley Kent, Jeanette Cudney, Jess Macheda and Maria Stalder each won two events. Kent ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.8 seconds and had a first-place triple jump of 35 feet 5 ¼ inches. Macheda went 14’10 ½” to prevail in the long jump after taking first in the 100-meter dash in 13.7 seconds.
Cudney went from a first-place time of 5:26.2 in the 1,500-meter run to also prevailing in the 3,000-meter run in 11:48.9. Stalder held on for victories in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.5 and the 200-meter dash, where she and teammate Julia Raleigh both finished in 29.5 seconds.
Cazenovia also prevailed in two of the three relays. Cudney, Katherine Gabor, Maria Stalder and Colleen Stalder covered the 4×800 in 10:51.2, with the Stalder sisters and Gabor joining Bailey Forrett to help the Lakers take the 4×400 relay in 4:30.1. Colleen Stalder ran 800 meters in 2:40.2, with Glenna Kehelan and Liz Pittman each clearing 7 feet in the pole vault.
With all that done, the rescheduled meet with Phoenix, which also featured Marcellus, saw the Lakers easily prevail 108-33 over the Firebirds.
Pittman improved to 8’6” in the pole vault, with Kent going 30’11” in the triple jump and Cudney, in the 3,000, taking first place in 12:16.90. The Lakers also swept the 4×100 (55.9 seconds), 4×400 (4:32.3) and 4×800 (10:36.4) relays, with Kent, Cudney, Forrett, Macheda, Raleigh Gabor and the Stalder sisters all taking part, along with Delaney Yates.
Meanwhile, the Cazenovia boys team lost, 92-47, to Phoenix. Walker Nichols claimed two of the Lakers’ four individual titles, clearing 5’10” in the high jump and winning the 110 high hurdles in 16.4 seconds.
Sean Satchwell earned the Lakers’ other two victories, going under five minutes in the mile to prevail in 4:58.3 before turning his attention to the 800, where he finished first in 2:14.1.
When the boys Lakers held its three-way meet against Norwich and Solvay, it won 91-49 over the Purple Tornado, but could not keep up with the Bearcats, taking a 91-50 defeat.
Then both of Cazenovia’s sides made the short trip up the road to compete in Friday’s Chittenango Invitational, where the girls Lakers finished seventh out of 15 sides with 33 points, with the host Bears picking up 14 points.
Cudney provided a victory for Cazenovia in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, an exciting race where, in a time of 7:56.50, she held off Oneida’s Jordan Newton (7:56.92) for first place.
Macheda nearly won the long jump, going 14’9 ½” to only trail Auburn’s Shanika Williams (15’10”). Kent gave the Lakers a third-place triple jump of 31’7 ½”and was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.59 seconds), while Tori Fischer cleared 4’6” in the high jump to finish fifth.
Forrett, Kaitlyn Rossiter and the Stalder sisters got to fifth place in the 4×400 in 4:33.15. Hannah Dain was ninth in the discus as the Lakers took seventh in the 4×100. Chittenango’s Kaitlyn Bowyer took third place in the 200-meter dash in 28.86 seconds, while teammate Kaitlyn Swain was fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:14 flat.
In the boys Chittenango meet, where Cazenovia had 22 points and the host Bears 20 points, Nichols went 19’5 ½” in the long jump, second to Liverpool’s Mark Vanmarter (20’1 ½”), and took second (16.99 seconds) to Baldwinsville’s Evan Donhauser (16.40 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles.
Nichols also was fourth (5’8”) in the high jump. Brandon Fox got sixth place in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.68 as Reed Lucas was seventh in the shot put.
Chittenango’s 4×800 relay quartet of Kenny Galbraith, Jonathan Roberts, Holden Lalor and Ben Seale made it to third place in 9:34.05. Individually, Mike Capeling made it to third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:40.23, with Isaac Czarnecki running the mile in 4:42.92 for third place as the Bears were also seventh in the 4×400.
