Sweeping all of the top spots in distance events, the Liverpool boys and girls track and field teams both managed first-place finishes at Monday afternoon’s Tully Spring Break Invitational.
On the boys side, the Warriors amassed 201 points, more than double the total of host Tully (79 points), who was second. The girls Warriors had 106 points to fend off Jamesville-DeWitt (87 points) and 13 other sides.
Connor Buck won the 3,200-meter run in 10:00.22, with Dylan McCarthy second in 10:22.35. It was the same in the mile, where Nick LeClair won in 4:33.19 and Ben Petrella was second in 4:37.64 as Ryan Comstock finished fifth in 4:45.78.
Alex Christensen took his turn in the 800-meter run and won it in 1:58.33, holding off Dan Muldoon, who blazed to second place in 1:58.97. Christensen, McCarthy, LeClair and Buck blazed to 8:19.36 to dominate the 4×800 relay,
Mark Vanmarter held off teammate Brandon Mayfield, 11.71 seconds to 11.79, in the 100-meter dash, and would later go 41 feet 9 ½ inches to win the triple jump. Trevor Monk, in 1:04.26, beat the field in the 400 hurdles, including Macadian Lellas (1:08.17) in third place.
Geoffrey Bell, throwing the shot put 46’5 ¼”, beat out Living Word Academy’s Forrest Thompson (43’8”) and the field to win that event. Bell later was part of a 1-2 effort in the discus as his throw of 133’6” trailed only teammate Chris Grannell, who won with 136’2”.
Mayfield added a second-place time of 24.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash behind Auburn’s Leon Atkins (23.77 seconds), and with Monk, Andre Douglas and James Williams, rolled to victory in the 4×100 relay in 47.04 seconds, well clear of Tully (48.55 seconds) in second place.
Peter Gonzalez, third in the 200 in 24.65 second, got second place in the 400-meter dash in 54.05 seconds, with Arfasa Haley fourth and Collin Gwilt fifth. Justin Rivera and Lellas were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 110 high hurdles.
Tyler Luciano went 18’ ½” for second place in the long jump, where Donald Frost finished sixth, just as Frost had done in the triple jump behind Vanmarter. Nate Guarente cleared 5’4” to finish third in the high jump, with David Lewis topping 9’6” to finish fourth in the pole vault.
Abby McNamara, in the 3,000-meter run, prevailed in 11:18.40, holding off teammate Morgan Mahoney (11:21.88) for another 1-2 finish. As if that wasn’t enough, McNamara went to the 1,500-meter run and, in 5:04.36, edged Cortland’s Haley Tasselmyer (5:04.82) for the top spot.
Jillian Stagnitta, Morgan Chewning-Kulick, Kristina Moore and Juliana Basla went 10:33.58 to finish nearly half a minute ahead of Hannibal (11:02.91) and win the 4×800 relay.
Ore Akinpelu went under a minute – 59.29 seconds, to be precise – and won the 400-meter dash as the only girl to break the one-minute mark. She also won the 200-meter dash in 26.11 seconds over Auburn’s Maggie Doyle (26.65 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
Nelliah Watkins, with a throw of 31’4 ¼”, was second to Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Bella Sterly (35’ 5 ¼”) in the shot put. Alexis Bittel went 30’9 ¼” to gain third place in the triple jump, where Yasmeen Griffin was sixth.
The Warriors were also third in the 4×100 relay (54.75 seconds) and fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:50.54. Destinee Luciano took fifth (1:19.85) in the 400 hurdles, while Amy Zurawski finished sixth in the high jump.
