Twice in the early part of April, both of the Skaneateles track and field teams saw season openers wiped out by the weather, as trips to Hannibal and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown were scrapped.
So the Lakers’ first real action of the season didn’t take place until last Saturday, when it went down the road to the Jordan-Elbridge Relay Invitational and made some immediate history.
In the girls 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the Skanetaeles quartet of senior Madeline Adams, sophomore Katelyn Ellison, senior Taylor Woodruff and eighth-grader Mia Grasso posted a time of four minutes, 22.8 seconds that broke the school record for that event.
Later in the meet, Adams, paired with senior Maria Schillace and sophomores Jillian Van Leer and Emily Norris, got a time of 11:11.9 that was far clear of Auburn (11:35.6) and the rest of the field in the 4×800 relay.
And that wasn’t the only victory. In the boys 100-meter dash, senior Jeff Kringer prevailed, his time of 11.3 seconds half a second better than the field, which included Patrick Biver, who was fourth in 11.9 seconds.
Also, freshman Raenah Campbell beat the field in the girls 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.1, while Sophomore Amanda Wetmore took third place in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds. Wetmore, Ellison, Grasso and sophomore Olivia Gage were fourth (1:58.8) in the 800 sprint medley.
In the boys pole vault, junior Max Messie won it, clearing 10 feet 6 inches, while junior teammate Dalton Carter (9 feet) finished third and the Lakers won the team event with 19’6” combined. Carter also was fifth in the long jump.
Grasso’s impressive debut included a top long jump of 13’6” as she and Wetmore (14 feet) were second, with 27’6”, behind Hannibal’s top total of 29’4 ½”. Grasso also cleared 4’6” in the high jump to tie for third place as junior Eli Goodell tied for second in the boys high jump, clearing 5’10”.
