Democrat Mary Bean was elected the new supervisor of the town of Spafford last week.
Bean received 373 votes to Republican Webb Stevens’ 298, according to the Onondaga County Board of Elections website.
In the race for two town council seats, incumbent Chris Fesko and Republican Dave Venezia received the most votes out of five total candidates.
Bean said that she was thrilled to have won and that the victory wouldn’t have been possible without bipartisan support.
“I could not have won the election without significant support from Republicans,” she said. “This is a Republican bastion, it’s been eons since a Democrat was elected supervisor in the town of Spafford.”
Bean received more votes than there are registered Democrat voters in the town. For this election there were 351 Democrats and 610 Republicans out of the 1,282 total registered voters for Spafford. The 688 total ballots cast on Election Day represent a 54 percent voter turnout.
Bean said she was excited to get to work right away when she takes office in January. She wants to work on improving communication with residents, dealing with personnel matters and more.
Stevens was seeking his fifth term as supervisor of Spafford, he has held that position for the past eight years in addition to time spent as town justice and town assessor. He had no comment when contacted about the results of the election.
Fesko was the only incumbent and the other four candidates, as well as Bean, had never held an elected post.
The current makeup of the Spafford town board is three Republicans and two Democrats. That will change to three Democrats and two Republicans for the next two year following these results. Joining Fesko, Bean and Venezia in January will be councilors Republican Jeff Ireland and Democrat Louis Hanlon who will both be up for re-election in 2015.
Town supervisor in Spafford is a two-year term, while town council, town clerk, town tax collector and highway superintendent are all 4-year terms.
The results will be official once the board of elections tallies absentee ballots and certifies the results on Nov. 14.
