As the Marcellus and Westhill girls soccer teams squared off once more before their Section III Class B playoff journeys began, other local teams tried to close out the regular season with some more wins on the ledger.
Solvay, who is also headed to the sectional tournament, gained one of those victories last Wednesday night, venturing to Bishop Ludden and making a big second-half comeback to defeat the Gaelic Knights 3-2.
When Nicole Granteed and Morgan Beamish scored in the first half, giving Ludden a 2-0 edge, it looked to be in great shape. But everything turned around in the last 40 minutes as Solvay took control of the game.
Led by Loren Lucio, who scored twice, and Nicole Antonacci, who had the other goal, the Bearcats pulled it out, goalie Chelsie Delperuto finishing with four saves, one more than Ludden counterpart Gemma O’Kane.
Two days later, Ludden lost at home, 2-0, to Westhill, a game where the Warriors used goals by Tataina Monds and Lindsey Lippert to move out in front and shut down all of the Gaelic Knights’ chances, Sam Peebles recording eight saves.
Jordan-Elbridge ran into Cazenovia last Tuesday afternoon, taking a 7-2 defeat to the Lakers as it just could not keep up with an active, aggressive attack from the opposition.
Brienna Fabrize did score once in each half, and Leah Wright finished her day with 12 saves. Cazenovia had too much firepower, though, as Audrey Burbidge led with three goals and one assist.
Then the Eagles lost at home 6-0 to Skaneateles on Thursday night as the state Class B no. 7-ranked Lakers, led by Molly Wood (two goals) and Tate Green (one goal, two assists), wrapped up the OHSL Liberty National division regular-season title.
Solvay drew the no. 10 seed in Class B, and meets no. 7 seed Cazenovia in the opening round Tuesday night, with the winner to go after no. 2 seed and defending champion Marcellus in the quarterfinals.
Westhill, meanwhile, drew the no. 5 seed, and has a first-round assignment against no. 12 seed Holland Patent on Tuesday, hoping to advance to a quarterfinal against Skaneateles or Frankfort-Schuyler.
