Earning one of its most exciting wins of the season, the Liverpool girls volleyball team knocked off West Genesee in five sets last Thursday night.
The Warriors, who caught the Wildcats coming off a loss to Baldwinsville two nights earlier, nearly had a sweep, winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20. But WG pulled out the third set 25-23 and got the fourth set, too, 25-21 to even up the match.
Finally, Liverpool put WG away 25-15 in the final set as Emily Flohr managed 21 kills, six aces and 10 digs. Sam Wolf added 10 kills, 12 digs and three aces, while Amelia Bartier (five kills), Julia Mumpton (four kills) and Ciara Duck (three kills) helped on the front line.
Meg Stonebarger managed 36 assists, to go with 13 digs, five kills, three blocks and two aces. Amanda Lauricella got 16 digs and Ivanna Grynyk had seven digs, with each of them also picking up a trio of aces.
Prior to that, Liverpool rolled to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-14 sweep over Corcoran, with Stonebarger again doing a bit of everything as she gained 21 assists, eight digs, five aces and three kills. Flohr led the Warriors’ front line, earning 11 kills, but each of the 12 Liverpool players that saw action earned at least one kill, including Wolf, who got five kills.
Cicero-North Syracuse had an impressive effort in last Tuesday’s match against Central Square, sweeping the Red Hawks 25-15, 25-10, 25-20.
Kelsey Hess finished with 11 assists, with Jess Doran close behind as she earned 10 assists, the pair getting four digs apiece. Tiffany Ryan amassed 25 digs as, up front, Kira Kullman had five kills, four aces and six digs, while Mallory Eymer had four kills. Samantha Roberts contributed 12 digs and Miriam Ghabarou added three kills.
A 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 sweep of Corcoran followed on Thursday night, the Northstars getting six kills from Elizabeth Miles, five kills from Hannah Millias and four kills from Kullman, who set the tone with eight aces. Millias and Frankie Gleason each had 11 digs as Hess (10 assists), Eymer (five assists) and Jess Doran (three assists) shared back-line duties.
Meanwhile, the C-NS boys volleyball team had a pair of matches to work through, including last Monday’s 25-14, 25-16, 25-17 sweep over the combined Syracuse city squad.
Morgan Austen and Josh Rodriguez each finished with 11 kills, with Austen adding five aces. Andrew Boczyk had four kills and two blocks, with Robert Palucci and Luke Barnell each gaining six digs. Aaron Goodell anchored the back line with 22 assists as Sean Korbas picked up three kills.
C-NS also met Central Square, splitting the first two sets, but then completely dominating the third and fourth sets on the way to a 25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 25-11 victory over the Red Hawks.
Rodriguez improved to 18 kills, with Palucci managing 10 kills to go with his 15 digs. Boczyk earned 11 kills and Austen contributed eight kills in front of Goodell, who did most of the back-line work with 30 assists as Garrett Coleman only had seven assists.
Liverpool had to host Baldwinsville last Wednesday and won the first set 25-19, only to have the Bees win the second set 25-16 and, in the pivotal third set, fend off some key Liverpool chances to win it 27-25 before a 25-20 fourth set closed it out.
Dalton Horton finished with 27 assists, feeding it to Joe Kenney, who managed 16 kills to go with five aces, three blocks and four digs. Brendan Corp added six kills and Anthony Calabrese picked up 13 digs. Ryan Turner added three kills as, for B’ville, Pat Dubiel (48 assists), Dalton Mahan (14 kills) and Delsean Griffith (11 kills) led their effort.
Liverpool lost on Thursday to Horseheads, winning the first set 25-16 and nearly getting the second set, too, but falling apart from that point as the visitors won the last three sets 28-26, 25-16 and 25-22. Kenney had 14 kills, four aces and four digs, with Corp adding nine kills. Horton put together 32 assists as Calabrese contributed eight digs.
